🦉 The common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)
- Cuculus (lat.) cuckoo
- canorus (lat.) melodic, musical
Everyone has heard of this bird, but few have seen it in person. And that's not surprising, as it's very cautious and shy. Even perched high in tall trees, it tries to fly away, barely noticing you approaching. I was hiding in the bushes, so the bird didn't notice me, and I was able to take these pictures.
Their joint sabotage against small birds, into whose nests they lay eggs, is quite intriguing. The male distracts the victim's attention while the female does her work. However, if she is suddenly discovered, she begins to scream terribly. Added to this, her hawk-like coloring does its job, frightening the bird.
