🦉 The Eurasian hobby (Falco subbuteo)
- Falco phalcōn (Greek), falco (Lat.) falcon; the word falco is derived from falx (sickle, scythe) and means "curved in the form of a sickle", which is associated with the shape of a falcon's wing in flight or its powerful sickle-shaped claws (Gotch, 1981)
- subbuteo lat.: sub below, under, close to.., partly, buteo buzzard

Every year I encounter these birds in the same place. It's a small, tiny patch of forest, densely planted with tall conifers, where these birds build their nests. The surrounding area is ordinary mixed forest, near the river.

These predators feed on flying insects, such as dragonflies and butterflies, and small birds. However, this doesn't stop small birds from living nearby.
