🦉 The common rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus)
📚 Carpodacus Greek: karpos fruit, daknō to bite
📚 erythrinus erythros (Greek, lat.) red
These birds are one of the latest to arrive in Siberia in spring. This is due to the fact that at first, for some reason, they fly far to the east, and then return back.
And already in May, you can hear their funny songs, which can be conveyed in words like "nice to meet you!"
This song is sung by bright pink males sitting on separate and clearly visible branches for everyone to see. Moreover, the older the male becomes, the brighter and more saturated the pink colors on his head and chest.
In spring, these birds willingly eat various buds, willow catkins. Later they feed on overripe seeds that they look for on the ground, but also eat small insects, mainly naked caterpillars, aphids and small beetles. With the advent of nestlings, food becomes more and more vegetable, mainly juicy unripe seeds.
