🦉 The grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus), also known as the grey-faced woodpecker
📚 Picus (lat.) woodpecker; in Romanesque mythology, Peak, or Picus, the Roman god of forests and the king of Latium, distinguished by male beauty, rejected the love claims of the sorceress Circe (Kirka), after which the offended Kirka turned him into a woodpecker
📚 canus (lat.) gray
This type of woodpecker is not common, I would even say rare. However, it is very different from all other types of woodpeckers, and it's not just about his beautiful appearance and plumage color. He has a melancholy gentle voice, slightly reminiscent of the cries of hawks.
I met this handsome man in the photo at the very beginning of spring, when there was still snow, but the sun was already warming. He sat in a tree and drummed. This is marriage behavior. After displaying himself, he flew to other trees to find insects under the bark of the tree and eat.
