I hear these birds around me all the time, their call is quite unique. Not like the song birds, these predatory birds have a very different call. I was lucky enough to get some pictures of one when it was near by. When I saw it I grabbed my camera and took some pictures from a far not to disturb it. Though I got closer as I took more photos of this bird. I am not sure what kind it is but figured this would be a great post for this Friday's #featheredfriends and maybe someone around the community knows what kind of bird this is.
It appears to be checking out the creek below, probably waiting for something to run by.
This bird appears kind of small for a Hawk, maybe it was a young one.
It does not seem to notice me or care while I am far away.
Glad to have it around, these birds keep my berry bushes from getting raided by song birds.
Walking over to it I got about fifteen feet away and took some more pictures.
The just moved its head, seemingly it noticed me at this point.
But it seems distracted by checking out the creek below.
I try to get a little closer, with a picture each step I take in its direction. I am able to get another couple feet closer.
Though eventually I got too close for the birds liking, and it flew up into a tree near by. Maybe it was getting uncomfortable with me approaching it.
As soon as I looked away I could not find it again, though took a picture of the general area where it flew. Maybe you can spot it?
It was great having this encounter with this bird, I think it was a young Hawk, or maybe a Chicken hawk or Kestrel which are all smaller than normal sized Hawks. It does not look like a Falcon to me, so I think its some kind of Hawk or something close to that.
