Beautiful Backyard Birds
Another week is coming to an end with some much-needed warmth and sunshine. Many different types of birds are already visiting the bird feeders. Flocks of Robins and Sterlings have been appearing all week as they begin to arrive after this long winter.
Yellow-Shafted Northern Flicker
This gorgeous male Flicker visits our yard on a daily basis throughout the summer. It is often on the ground digging through the grass and dirt looking for its favorite snack, ants. For the past 10 years or so we have had at least two pairs of Flickers nesting in the woods behind the house. They prefer raising their young in the hollows of old trees like most woodpeckers do. It was especially fun watching them bring their young and feeding them on the ground. Each pair had two babies to rear and we are hoping that the young ones return to nest in our woods too.
They also enjoy coming to the birdbath for a dip throughout the summer. I love seeing them fly in with their famous dipitydo-type aerobatics which always makes me smile. They fly just like our resident Chickadees scooping high and low across the yard. I am looking forward to another summer sitting on the back porch enjoying all our #featheredfriends. Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
Until next time, this is Sunscape
