Shorebirds and Seabirds, not too many of them around this neck of the woods, although I do see some Seagulls hanging around the McDonalds in town. They sure do love French fries. The pictures that I've included in this post were taken while we were on vacation in the Sunshine State, Florida.
All of the pictures that I've included for round 140 are those of the Brown Pelican.
The day these pictures were shot, I was taking a walk with my granddaughter who joined us for the week, flying in from New Jersey with her family. When we picked them up from the airport she was all excited for this was the first time she had been on an airplane.
This was also the first time she had ever seen a bird of this size. This little girl has no fear and when we were within just a few feet of the bird, I had to stop her advance. She wanted to pet the pelican, which I told her was not a good idea. I explained to her that the bird was a wild bird and that it probably didn't like people touching it. Her next question was, Pop can I take the bird home? I explained to her that the bird didn't like cold weather and that's why it lives in Florida.
Her answer to that was that she would let the bird have her blanket. That sweet answer had me smiling from ear to ear. You've got to love the innocence of children!
One way or another she was going to work it all out. When I told her that the bird wouldn't be able to fly back home with her on the airplane, she had that problem solved as well.
Her suggestion was that the bird could follow the plane.
After convincing her that this also wouldn't work out, we both just stood there, her admiring the Brown Pelican and me admiring this very special little kid.
Good luck to all the folks that enter this week's contest.
