Vivimos en una era digital en la que todavía faltan recuerdos por digitalizar. Por extraño que parezca, todavía hay momentos que se inmortalizan en formato tradicional. Fotografías impresas que pasan a engrosar algún album o que quedan traspapeladas en el olvido. Y por supuesto, siguen existiendo las fotos del álbum familiar lleno de polvo que suelen sacar las mamás para ridiculizarnos en reuniones familiares o con amigos.
Esas fotografías, aunque vergonzosas en su mayoría, guardan momentos que vale la pena conservar, pues son parte nuestra historia. Las copias impresas con el tiempo se van deteriorando, el material se debilita, los colores se desvanecen, y así poco a poco, se van borrando los recuerdos, y los recuerdos pesan más cuando los protagonistas ya no están.
Por fortuna, hoy en día la tecnología nos sirve en bandeja de plata soluciones fabulosas para preservar en formato digital esos inolvidables momentos. Una de esas tanta soluciones ha sido desarrollada ya hace un tiempo de la mano de Google y se llama PhotoScan de Google Fotos, la cual ha mejorado significativamente desde su última actualización a la versión 1.7.

We live in a digital era where there are still memories waiting to be digitized. Strangely enough, there are still moments that are immortalized in traditional format. Printed photographs that are added to an album or left forgotten in a drawer. And of course, there are still the dusty old family photo albums that moms tend to bring out to embarrass us during family gatherings or with friends.
These photographs, although embarrassing for the most part, hold moments that are worth preserving as they are a part of our history. Printed copies slowly deteriorate over time, the material weakens, the colors fade, and little by little, memories are erased, memories that weigh heavier when the protagonists are no longer with us.
Fortunately, technology nowadays offers us fabulous solutions on a silver platter to preserve those unforgettable moments in digital format. One of these solutions has been developed by Google and it's called PhotoScan by Google Photos, which has significantly improved since its latest update to version 1.7.
PhotoScan de Google Fotos, nace con la premisa de rescatar las fotos del pasado gracias a la tecnología del futuro, simulando las funciones de un escáner mediante la cámara de los dispositivos móviles. Pero ojo, se trata de un escaneo inteligente que no altera los detalles de la fotografía original, nada que ver con la genialidad barata que se nos ocurre a nosotros de fotografiar las fotos y dañar el resultado con sombras, reflejos, la luz del flash, y eso sin mencionar que generalmente nos quedan torcidas.
Asistida con la magia de la inteligencia artificial, PhotoScan realiza un escaneo paso a paso de toda la fotografía, en cuyo proceso logra capturar todos sus detalles desde distintas perspectivas. El proceso para el usuario es transparente, rápido y sencillo, basta con enfocar la fotografía respetando obviamente los bordes que posteriormente serán detectados por la app, y seguir las instrucciones en pantalla, las cuales nos van guiando en el recorrido que debe hacer la cámara para completar el escaneo.
En resumen, inicialmente es tal cual como tomar una fotografía a una foto, (si, eso mismo que nosotros ya hacíamos), pero en adición, la app segmenta y escanea la fotografía en sus extremos para posteriormente combinarlas en una sola imagen. Finalmente, a esa imagen preliminar le aplica filtros para eliminar cualquier reflejo que pueda alterar la foto original. De esta manera, el resultado final es una fotografía perfectamente encuadrada y limpia, digna de engalanar nuestra colección de recuerdos.

PhotoScan by Google Photos, was born with the premise of rescuing photos from the past thanks to future technology, simulating the functions of a scanner using the camera of mobile devices. But beware, it's an intelligent scan that doesn't alter the details of the original photograph, nothing like the cheap idea that occurs to us when we photograph photos and damage the result with shadows, reflections, and flashlights, not to mention that they usually end up being crooked.
Assisted by the magic of artificial intelligence, PhotoScan performs a step-by-step scan of the entire photograph, capturing all its details from different perspectives in the process. The process for the user is transparent, quick, and easy, just by focusing the photograph and obviously respecting its borders which will be detected by the app, and following the instructions on the screen that guide us in the path that the camera must follow to complete the scan.
In summary, initially, it's just like taking a photograph of a photo (yes, that's exactly what we used to do), but in addition, the app segments and scans the photograph at its edges to subsequently combine them into a single image. Finally, the app applies filters to this preliminary image to eliminate any reflections that may alter the original photo. In this way, the final result is a perfectly framed and clean photograph, worthy of adorning our collection of memories.
Para documentar esta reseña con ejemplos, utilicé la portada de un libro, una fotografía en papel, e incluso, un cuadro pegado a la pared. Los resultados en los 3 casos me parecieron geniales. En el caso de la portada del libro y de la fotografía en papel, sin ninguna novedad; pero en cuanto al cuadro, la app me advirtió que evitara inclinar el dispositivo, asumo que se debe al tema de corrección de perspectiva en el escaneo de la imagen. No obstante, el resultado fue igual de bueno que en los casos anteriores.

To document this review with examples, I used the cover of a book, a printed photograph, and even a painting hanging on the wall. The results in all three cases seemed great to me. In the case of the book cover and the printed photograph, there were no surprises; but with the painting, the app warned me to avoid tilting the device, presumably due to perspective correction in the image scan. Nevertheless, the result was just as good as in the previous cases.
