¿Cómo están el día de hoy? Yo muy bien, muy feliz de estar otra vez por esta hermosa comunidad con un nuevo post que ya tenía muchas ganas de hacer, que es una pequeña continuación a uno que ya hice. Hace unos días hice un análisis psicológico de Ellie Williams (con ayuda de mucha investigación, no soy psicóloga), y me quedé con muchas ganas de hacer el de Joel. Sin más, quiero hablarles de este increíble personaje y todo lo que pude investigar sobre su psicología.

A few days ago I did a psychological analysis of Ellie Williams (with the help of a lot of research, I am not a psychologist), and I really wanted to do the one about Joel. Without further ado, I want to tell you about this amazing character and everything I was able to research about her psychology.
Joel Miller
Joel es el personaje principal en la trama del primer juego y pequeña parte del segundo, donde conocemos a un hombre solitario, de carácter fuerte, aparentemente frío, al cual no le importa matar a quien sea con tal de conseguir algo en específico o proteger a un ser querido. Hasta aquí puede sonar como un personaje malo o muy poco querido, pero debemos recordar que estamos en el mundo de the last of us, aquí nadie es totalmente bueno si quieres sobrevivir.
Joel is the main character in the plot of the first game and a small part of the second, where we meet a lonely man, with a strong character, apparently cold, who does not mind killing anyone to get something specific or protect a loved one. So far it may sound like a bad character or very unloved, but we must remember that we are in the world of the last of us, here no one is totally good if you want to survive.
Hablando de lo poco que conocemos de su vida, Joel es una persona que tuvo que madurar muy rápido, para poder cuidar a su hermano menor de todos los peligros a los que él se exponía. Gracias a esto, Joel va formando una personalidad fuerte y protectora con el fin de mantener vivos a los que quiere. Esto terminó creando en Joel un fuerte sentimiento de ireconocimiento propio, ya que en su vida el siempre tuvo que estar atento para proteger a los demás, pero a él nunca lo protegieron, quitándole así la posibilidad de ser vulnerable y conocerse a sí mismo.
Talking about the little we know of his life, Joel is a person who had to grow up very fast, in order to take care of his younger brother from all the dangers he was exposed to. Thanks to this, Joel forms a strong and protective personality in order to keep the ones he loves alive. This ended up creating in Joel a strong feeling of self-recognition, since in his life he always had to be attentive to protect others, but he was never protected, thus depriving him of the possibility to be vulnerable and to know himself.
Joel, como la mayoría de los personajes aquí, carga con la culpa del sobreviviente, el cual le trae flashbacks, recuerdos, y una necesidad extrema de alejarse de cualquier cosa que pueda recordar su momento traumático donde su hija muere sin él lograr su cometido de protegerla ante todo. Esto y muchas más cosas general en el este síndrome del superviviente, lo cual lo vuelve muchísimo más cerrado y distante a cualquier persona.
Joel, like most of the characters here, is burdened with survivor's guilt, which brings flashbacks, memories, and an extreme need to get away from anything that might remind him of his traumatic moment where his daughter dies without him achieving his mission of protecting her first and foremost. This and many more things generalize in this survivor syndrome, which makes him much more closed and distant to anyone.

Hasta este punto, entendemos que Joel es una persona que, gracias a su trauma con su hija y ahora son Tess, necesita siempre un motivo, algo que defender o cuidar, para así darle algún tipo de valor o significado a su vida. Esto es super importante para poder entender las decisiones que Joel tomo al final del primer juego, saliéndonos del moralismo y ese tipo de cosas.
Up to this point, we understand that Joel is a person who, thanks to his trauma with his daughter and now they are Tess, always needs a reason, something to defend or care for, in order to give some kind of value or meaning to his life. This is super important to be able to understand the decisions that Joel made at the end of the first game, getting out of moralism and that kind of thing.
Cuando Joel se daba cuenta de que poco a poco creaba un vínculo con Ellie, más buscaba alejarla de sí, ya que el recuerdo tan vivido que Ellie le traía a Joel de su hija, Shara, era un sentimiento insoportable, y buscaba enfrentar sus traumas escapando de ellos. This is a common occurrence, but as the game progresses, we see that Joel decides to confront his traumas and create a father-daughter bond with Ellie, certainly becoming vulnerable with her, even telling them things about his life that no one knew.

Joel risked everyone and a possible cure out of self-interest, since Ellie did want to die and was very willing to do so.
Aunque este tema del final sea un debate muy potente entre los fans de The last of us, yo no quiero juzgar a Joel, ya que sé que aquí actuaron sus más profundos traumas, y su pensamiento de que esta vez no dejaría morir a su hija entre sus brazos. Al final del día, nunca sabremos si la vacuna realmente hubiera funcionado o no, solo sabemos que Joel cumplió su promesa que le hizo a Tess, de cuidar a Ellie ante todo, lo cual es algo de admirar.
Although this issue of the ending is a very potent debate among fans of The last of us, I don't want to judge Joel, as I know that his deepest traumas were at work here, and his thought that this time he would not let his daughter die in his arms. At the end of the day, we will never know if the vaccine would have really worked or not, we only know that Joel kept his promise to Tess, to take care of Ellie first and foremost, which is something to admire.
