This is how I celebrated my 42nd birthday [ENG-ESP]

Among all the things that happened to me last month, one was my birthday; exactly 30 days ago, I celebrated turning 42 with my family. In the past, women didn’t want to reveal their age so they wouldn’t seem old, but now our age is synonymous with experience and confidence—the very same qualities that keep us from hiding it. So we’re proud of our forties 🤭. Let me tell you how I spent my birthday, which I celebrated on March 1 this year since it didn’t fall on February 29.

Entre todas las cosas que me pasaron el último mes, una fue mi cumpleaños; hoy hace 30 días célebre junto a mi familia la llegada de mis 42 años. Antes las mujeres no querían decir su edad para no parecer viejas, ahora nuestra edad es sinónimo de experiencia y seguridad, la misma que nos impide quitárnosla. Así que estamos orgullosas de nuestros cuarenta y tantos 🤭. Te cuento como pasé mi cumpleaños el cual este año célebre el 1 de marzo porque no cayó 29 de febrero.

In the years when my birthday doesn’t fall on a specific date, it’s not that I celebrate it with any less joy—I’m still turning another year older—but it’s less of a big deal than in the years when I do celebrate on February 29th. In those years, I even feel like doing something special since it’s a date that only comes around once every four years. But the rest of the years, thanks to my husband and children, I have a special day because they take care of planning it for me.

This year, March 1st fell on a Sunday, so my husband and kids went out on Saturday afternoon (I was feeling a little under the weather; I’d been cleaning all day and my whole body ached). When they got back, surprise! They’d brought me a beautiful cake—I’d honestly never seen a more beautiful cake, even from a bakery. It was gorgeous.

Los años en los que no cae la fecha exacta de mi nacimiento, no es que lo célebre con menos alegría, al fin y al cabo, estoy cumpliendo un año más; pero, es menos intenso que los años en los que si celebro el 29 de febrero, en esos años hasta me da por querer hacer algo especial, pues solo es una fecha que se da cada cuatro años. Pero, el resto de los años gracias a mi esposo e hijos paso un día especial porque ellos se encargan de planificarlo para mi.
Este año primero de marzo fue domingo, así que mi esposo y mis hijos salieron el sábado en tarde (yo me sentía un poco indispuesta, había estado todo el día haciendo aseo y me dolía todo el cuerpo). Cuando llegaron, ¡sorpresa! Me habían traído una hermosa torta, de verdad no había visto una torta mas bella que estuviera hecha en una panadería. Era hermosa.

On Saturday night, my husband and I stayed up chatting and having a few drinks, and at midnight on Sunday, surprise! He’d bought me presents too; honestly, I wasn’t expecting it at all. They wished me a happy birthday, and then we sang “Happy Birthday” and ate cake.

My gifts were great, too: they got me a gorgeous smartwatch with three interchangeable straps so I can feel like I have a different watch every week, plus a 4 GB flash drive that I needed to save all the information for my undergraduate research project. They really thought of everything, because I didn’t have a watch and I needed the flash drive. So they really outdid themselves.

El sábado en la noche nos quedamos hablando y bebiéndonos unos tragos (mi esposo y yo) y a las 12 am del domingo, ¡sorpresa! También me había comprado regalos, de verdad eso no me lo esperaba. Me felicitaron y luego de eso cantamos el “Cumpleaños Feliz” y comimos torta.
Mis regalos también estuvieron geniales, me compraron un reloj inteligente, hermoso, con tres correas para cambiarlo y sentir que tengo un reloj diferente cada semana. Además de un pen Drive de 4 gb el cual necesitaba para guardar toda la información sobre mi trabajo de investigación de grado. De verdad pensaron en todo, porque reloj no tenía y el Pen Drive lo necesitaba. Así que se botaron.

To wrap up my birthday on Sunday—because, well, there was more to it—I was invited out to lunch. We also invited my mother-in-law. We went to a famous spot in town that serves delicious grilled chicken, though they also offer meat, seafood, and even pizza—but we went specifically for the chicken. You can’t see what we ate, though, because we took the photos before the food had been served. The important thing is that everything was delicious and we had a nice time—that’s how I wrapped up my birthday celebration. I was happy because my family did it for me.

Para terminar el domingo con mi cumpleaños, porque si, hubo más. Me invitaron a almorzar. También invitamos a mi suegra. Fuimos a comer en un lugar famoso de la ciudad donde se come un pollo a la brasa muy rico, aunque también venden carnes, mariscos y hasta pizza, pero nosotros fuimos por el pollo. Aunque no se ve que comimos, porque las fotografías las tomamos cuando todavía no nos habían traído la comida. Lo importante es que estuvo muy rico todo y pasamos un momento agradable, de esta manera terminé la celebración de mi cumpleaños. Feliz , porque mi familia lo hizo para mí.
