Many have erroneously valued life based on the things a man has - assets, houses, business worth, etc. Little we forget that none of us go with this things after our short lifespan on earth compared to eternity afterwards. There is a Bible story in the Gospel of Luke 12, as was told of Jesus of a rich man who saw wealth as his value on earth. He broke his barn and built another and succored his soul to eat fat and be merry unknown to him that that would be his last night.
Life has a way of catching with us unawares for our it is not in our hands but in the hands of God. He chooses to do as He pleases. This should bring us to the consciousness that we live for the Lord and for him alone.
13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Verses and 14 of the above cited passage also shows a life scene of a man that beckoned on Jesus to come share material wealth between another. The response of the Lord of the universe was that which tak the true essence of life from the material. The true value of our lives are not in things we possess as Jesus advises. Our value is defined by the content of God in our lives (v21).
It is important that in all our getting, that we be rich toward God. The wealth of God is embedded in Christ Jesus. He is the fullness of the Godhead (Colossians 2: 9) and all things were created for him and by him (Colossians 1: 16).
Life is a gift from God and we have to receive instructions from him to live. There is no satisfaction in life in all material things. One who has money needs more, one who has cars and assets need more and the list continues.
Ont truth to note that in all the freedom we are seeking and enjoying to express life in all forms, we all will be called to account by God. Read what scripture says in Ecclesiastes 11: 9.
9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
We may enjoy all the freedom today and get all that we desire. However, we must be conscious of a time when we will present ourselves before the Lord and lay our accounts.
I pray that we shall not all labour into acquiring only things that perisheth - Amen.
