After our house got broken into—the thieves came in through one of the windows—I’ve been thinking a lot about what I can do to beef up security. Besides the obvious stuff, like putting up bars or security screens on the windows, I came up with some other ideas. I decided one of the best moves would be to install better outdoor lighting, especially since the streetlights around here are terrible and basically useless for keeping an eye on what’s happening outside.
Mejorando la iluminación exterior: Mi proyecto de seguridad tras un robo
Tras el robo que sufrimos en casa, donde unos ladrones ingresaron por una de las ventanas, he estado pensando mucho en qué puedo hacer para aumentar la seguridad. Más allá de lo obvio, que es colocar protectores o rejas en las ventanas para cerrar el paso físico, se me ocurrieron otras ideas. Decidí que una de las mejores opciones era colocar lámparas que iluminen mucho mejor el exterior, ya que la iluminación de los postes de luz de la calle es pésima y prácticamente no sirve para vigilar lo que pasa afuera.
In my city, these waterproof LED lamps with an IP65 rating have become really popular. They caught my eye because they’re high-power; you can easily find them starting at 150W, which is perfect for lighting up wide, dark areas. The one I bought is a 200W "Driver on Board" (DOB) model. It’s a very powerful light that’s rated for outdoor use and, best of all, it has a standard screw base so I can install it directly into a regular socket
En mi ciudad se han hecho muy populares unos modelos de lámparas LED que son resistentes al agua, con un índice de protección IP65. Estas lámparas me llamaron la atención porque también son de alta potencia; se consiguen fácilmente a partir de 150W, lo cual es ideal para proyectar mejor la luz en espacios amplios y oscuros. Esta que compré específicamente es del modelo driver on board (DOB). Es una lámpara muy potente de 200W que también sirve para exteriores y, lo mejor de todo, es que ya posee la rosca para instalarla directamente en un socket normal.
To get it running, I tapped into the power from a light already at the front of the house so I wouldn’t have to run a new line from too far away. Since I had some spare wire lying around, I spliced the pieces together to make an extension. I used outdoor-rated jacketed wire for the part running over the roof and ran it along the structure until it reached the front where I needed the light
Para la instalación, primero tomé el voltaje de una lámpara que ya estaba ubicada en el frente de la casa para no tener que hacer una conexión desde tan lejos. Como tenía varios trozos de cable guardados, los uní cuidadosamente para hacer una extensión. Utilicé y tendí sobre el techo la parte del cable recubierto o engomado, que es el especial para exteriores, y lo llevé a lo largo de la estructura hasta alcanzar la parte del frente donde necesitaba la luz.
For the mount, I scouted through my stuff and found a perforated metal beam. I attached it to the edge of the roof to act as a makeshift pole. For the connection, I went with a ceramic socket because, from experience, I know the rubber or plastic ones just dry rot and crack from being out in the sun. I used a bolt, a spacer, and a nut to secure the socket firmly to the beam
Para el soporte, busqué entre mis cosas y encontré una viga agujereada. La coloqué en el borde del techo para que me sirviera de poste improvisado. Para esta conexión, utilicé un socket cerámico, ya que por experiencia sé que los de goma o plástico se tuestan y se parten por el contacto directo con el sol. Con un tornillo, un separador y una tuerca, sujeté el socket firmemente a la viga.
That’s how I put together this front light using simple materials I already had on hand. It has made a huge difference in the outdoor lighting, and now I have a much better view of the surroundings from inside. My plan is to add similar lights around the entire perimeter and eventually install security cameras. It’s all about creating a deterrent for anyone thinking about trying to break into my home again.
Así fue como instalé, de forma sencilla y con materiales que tenía a la mano, esta lámpara para el frente de la casa. Con esto logré mejorar muchísimo la iluminación exterior y ahora tengo una mejor visualización de todo el entorno desde adentro. Mi plan a futuro es colocar otras lámparas similares por todo el perímetro y, más adelante, instalar cámaras de seguridad. Todo esto lo hago como una medida de disuasión para quienes quieran intentar volver a ingresar a robar.
