In 2019 Brandon Doege was fired from his job as a Sheriff's Deputy in Bexar County, Texas. The reason for that was a situation in which Mr Doege allegedly assaulted an inmate. He likely knew that his use of force was not justified or reasonable as he went for the effort of deactivaing another deputy's body camera, likely to cover up what actually took place. You would think that would warrant criminal charges - but, as is often the case when malefactors are employed in government service, Mr Doege received significant leniency and all that happened was he lost his job as a law enforcement officer.
Later on, he took a job at the Sea World amusement park in San Antonio, Texas. There, his role was that of a costumed pig. And yes, the irony is thick here - I had quite a chuckle reading the report, even though overall the situation was far from funny. He lost this job too - after allegedly attacking a 14-year old boy and a 53-year old relative who stood up for the teenage victim. Mr Doege claims the reason for the attack was hat the boy had addressed him in a disrespectful manner.
Would that still have happened if Mr Doege had faced more serious consequences for the 2019 attack on the inmate? That is hard to tell. But it is clear that special treatment government employees often get breeds nothing but corruption and sense of entitlement. This is one more episode illustrating the need to make any sort of qualified immunity and protections it confers a thing of the past.
