Maersk has suspended operations in Russia due to the war in Ukraine. I suspected this would be painful but did not realize how painful it is likely to be. The problem is not so much that Mearsk will make it impossible for any business to lease a container to go to or from Russia. Even if Russia keeps all the containers that are there (about 50,000, according to the Russian economist Dmitry Potepenko, see an interview with him linked below) eventually these containers are going to be tracked and taken out of circulation if they ever leave Russia and transit through a port that Mearsk has access to, which would be just about any shipping hub in the world.
It is interesting - and fascinating - how powerful the "sort" power of economics is in today's world. I knew it - but I certainly was not aware of its full scope, until recently.
