Yeonmi Park is someone who introduces herself as a North Korean defector and human rights activist. She most certainly is the latter; the former is hard to independently confirm but since no one has shown her story to be fake - and she is not wanting for enemies who would love nothing more than being able to prove her to be a fake, I tend to believe she is largely telling the truth.
In 2007, aged 13, she and her mother illegally crossed a frozen border river to get from North Korea to China. Human smugglers that facilitated their escape passed them to some local Chinese men seeking sexual slaves and that was what they were for awhile until they managed to earn some money and enough trust of their captors to let them proceed on their journey that saw them escape on to Mongolia, from where Park made her way to South Korea and the on to the US.
And she is telling us that the woke culture in the US has literally gone too far and in some ways is worse than the propaganda in her native country. Sounds bizarre - but that is not necessarily so. In her opinion, the outright propaganda backed by state terror, the in-your-face lies one is forced to accept on the fear of facing death is less effective than highly pervasive but yet seemingly well intentioned, though equally intolerant, woke propaganda dominating campuses in the Western world today.
Her comparisons are vivid indeed. The families being persecuted there for the "class crimes" of their ancestors in North Korea is not that dissimilar to White people being blamed for all evils of colonialism and slavery in the West, even if practiced centuries ago. Her comparison of the collectivism of North Korea to that of the Western woke culture is also striking.
Park sounds like somebody who certainly knows that of which she speaks. And we would all be best advised to listen.
