Last year, while on a hike through the mountains of the Czech Republic, two hikers unearthed a hidden treasure that appears to fit a storybook description. The discovery has recently gained attention in the news.
During their hike, they came across something shiny in the stone wall next to their trail. To their surprise, it was actually a hidden trove containing 598 coins and pieces of jewellery, mostly gold with some silver, weighing about 7 kilograms (15 pounds). According to reports, the treasure is worth over CZK 7.5 million (~$320,000 USD), though no official government valuation has been issued.
The coins date back to between 1808 and 1915 and are composed of metal from many different countries, which makes it hard to determine the full historical and monetary value of these coins.
Experts have theorised as to what might have caused these coins to be hidden for a long time, and some suggest they were concealed by family during wartime; others think merchants used them for protection against enemies or placed them there for other reasons. What sets this new find apart from previous finds is that it has been hidden longer than any other coin trove found in Europe in the past five years, and very few finds have been in as good condition as this set.
The hikers reported the discovery to the local government and researchers, who are now putting together an inventory of these coins and doing research to determine their historical significance. In the Czech Republic, any valuable historical finds are legally required to be reported, and authorities often offer a reward to the finder.
The hikers were amazed to discover an outstanding find while doing something routine: "We couldn't believe our eyes," one said.
It's a reminder that sometimes we find great fortune in the most unexpected places. While the coins themselves have some material value, their history and the mystery relating to why they were hidden are worth much more than their weight in gold.
