It occurred to me this morning that I am really not a pessimist, I am just used to - as a simple result of actual experience - the reality that most things don't tend to work out as they are supposed to, or we expect them to.
Pessimist? I Don't Think so...
I certainly hope that life/things will work out as planned, but I have zero expectations to that effect, so when the seemingly inevitable happens and shit goes upside-down I tend to just shrug and get to work on damage control and workarounds.
No big deal.
"God, you are horribly pessimistic!"
Not really. Just practical... and I tend to root my reality in actual experience, rather than dreams of rainbow sprinkles, entitlement and unrealistic expectations.
For example, I consider the fact that the 10-day weather forecast finally is "promising" some warmer days with sun, starting about a week from today.
Where I definitely have hope that they are actually right this time, I have no expectations that it will be anything but cold and rainy, as it has been.
I will be prepared to make available some time to seriously start in on our gardening plans, but I'm not casting any of those plans in concrete. It'll be really nice if it comes to pass, but I'm going to leave it at that.
If Wishes Were Fishes...
I really wish I had more time to write, and I had definitely hoped to take more time to write... but the reality is that I now need to launch myself into yet another period of "extra after-hours work" to raise another $1,500-$1,600 to cover those unexpected taxes we'll owe, due to a change in the tax code.
Our friends were over visiting yesterday, and one of things we talked about — because we're all self-employed with several streams of income from small business — is the ridiculousness of the proposed legislation requiring reporting to the IRS of any amounts over $600/year through a 3rd party processor.
That suddenly means that if someone sells a couple of pieces of used furniture on Craigslist and take PayPal as payment for more than $600, some kind of "tax paperwork" will be generated. The reporting limit used to be $20,000....
The bookkeeping nightmare is mindblowing...
Bunneh sez: "Just say NO to more paperwork!"
The Ironic Bit...
The irony of really small business is that they are often only marginally profitable... and when the paperwork/reporting requirements grow too complicated, it is that very paperwork that actually serves to make the business UN-profitable.
It was something I used rail against, 30 years ago... and here I am, still railing against it.
And yet? Unless there were people willing to persevere with the "edge" endeavors, we'd have so many fewer choices because only the most "average" mainstream products/services would be available.
How boring!
