I was recently speaking to a friend of mine about privileges and how much he had, the reason for this topic was because he always made excuses for his privileges and would literally deny them but I had to make it clear to him that he had them.
He had recently moved back to Nigeria from Ghana and in a week he got a job, and if you know the Nigerian Job market you would realize how crazy this is but he still refused to acknowledge that he was a privileged person.
Now before I move on, Privilege is defined by lexico.com as a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group and a lot of people have certain privileges without knowing them, i.e someone born in a first-world country has a certain advantage over someone who is birthed in a third-world country.
For me, I recognize that I am very privileged, I know I wasn’t raised in a rich home or even middle class but I was lucky enough to have a mother who fought to give me what I needed and also, I know at one point I didn’t know if I could afford university but I was also lucky enough to get a scholarship, and like it or not many people never had these opportunities that I had so I would always have gratitude.
I feel a certain way about people who are ungrateful or refuse to see certain privileges that they have, because in our society today, certain privileges can be used as boosts in our careers, finances, and life in general, and it is important to know that you are at a certain place because of what you were given.
I also hate the term self-made because as much as someone might have worked hard to build a business or a career, no one is really self-made because certain things aided the growth, and using that term disregards all those factors.
Yes, a lot of people might say that just because they had that privilege doesn’t mean others didn’t have it and fall through but they also need to realize that just because others didn’t have it doesn’t mean that those people would fall through or fail in life if you understand what I mean.
In conclusion, I believe we should live life counting our blessings, a lot of little things like even having a good phone or laptop to write on hive or even being able to eat is a privilege that a lot of people would beg to have and if we have it, we should live life acknowledging these little things.
I would always say a person without gratitude would never be satisfied and that is the truth.
I would love to hear your thoughts about having privileges and if you feel like you are privileged you can tell us how.
