As a child, I spent countless days playing with my brother and friends under the comfort of a large Neem Tree. It was the largest tree in our neighbourhood. It was massive with a very wide trunk and a large web of branches.
I remember some of its branches were coming down on our roof and I, along with my brother would prefer them over stairs when we had to go up or down the roof. It was much more fun and exciting. My mom never liked us going up and down from this unconventional route. After every rain, the leaves would glisten with droplets of water and the air will be filled with the sweet smell of damp earth. I would give anything away for that smell.
We would tie a couple of ropes and make a swing, we had some funny accidentally with those as well. With the advancement in technology, sadly very few children can experience those fun activities, it hurts me seeing 5 years old fixating on their screens rather than experiencing life the way it should be experienced.
Anyways, this tree not only gave me a sense of joy and entertainment but also developed a constant feeling of appreciation and gratitude towards mother nature. That positive childhood experience gave me a sense of comfort and made my bonds with nature very strong.
To this day, I prefer to travel to peaceful places far away from the noise of cities.
I sometimes wish they could talk about, share their experience and tell us the tales of all the things they have seen from their eyes. Standing firm and tall even after blizzards and storms. How they would tell about the changes they saw growing up, from being a little seed to achieving towering heights.
We had to cut the family tree when we built our new home but the things it taught me and the connection it created with nature will never be destructed inside me.
That neem tree was so much more than just a tree it was a symbol of all my childhood memories and I can't even remember my childhood without thinking about the role a silent tree played in my life. Much more memorable than any friend I had.
