SIDE HUSTLES A LIFE SAVER

Academics in a university setting can be really stressful and come with so much pressure to meet expectations from parents and personal aspirations. There are a lot of activities that go on within the university walls, ranging from lectures to practicals, exams, and extracurricular activities. With all the pressure that comes with this, financial problems grow among students as there are so many textbooks to buy, practicals to pay for, and various other small bills to manage. Students who depend only on their parents can barely survive, and under the pressure to make ends meet, we students juggle a lot of responsibilities to stay afloat.

It is not easy to balance academics and side hustles. While I’m no longer in school, I had a few commitments I made while I was there. During my time in school, I was into hairstyling and baking; I used these skills to support myself financially. Balancing it all was not easy. In my final year, I enrolled in training for perfume making and even started selling them. There’s plenty more—I learned tailoring for one week and started making my school departmental skirts. It was just a straight-cut skirt, and I would sell it for 3,500. The stress was too much, but I survived.

The full-time commitment I made while in school was to start baking cupcakes, which I sold in the hostel and during lectures. It was very stressful, but it covered some bills. You can imagine it was a very busy week indeed; sometimes I was too tired to read or even take care of myself. I did my reading at 3 AM in the morning and did my laundry on Saturday nights to meet my schedule during the week. The cycle went on, but in the end, I’m glad I made it through and came out strong. Adequate planning can help you achieve it all and stand firm.
