I gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria, in 2015. Enrolled into a new life I wasn't familiar with, especially waking up by 7am which was never my thing. The school was located opposite the school hostel where I lived, separated by a major road leading to the heart of Zaria. One thing I never enjoyed was waking up earlier than 8am. Any lecture scheduled between 7-8:30am wasn't for me, and I was never scared of the threat of attendance-It never bothered me.
In my room were 3 other boys. I was the only one who woke up by 8am and started preparing for the day. I didn't bother much about breakfast because we do cook the night before, and if there's no remnant, cassava flake was always available- ThankGod I never went blind while in school, hahaha. My course is health related and most of our lectures start by 9am except for a few lecturers who preferred the 7-8am lecturers, which I don't attend on most days especially if it's not scheduled for tests or exams.
While in school, the back roll was my favorite, and one of the reasons why I sit there is to avoid questions. I prefer to just stay low while I learn than being bothered about becoming the lecturer's focus. I had my crew, we looked unserious for the first year until our results exposed us to why we never read so hard. The highest number of lectures we have for a day is 4 scheduled from 9am to 4pm, but we rarely leave school at 4pm except if we are sure the lecturer is coming, most of the time, they don't. During my free period, I hang out with friends or use my phone- I was already making money on some platforms at that time.
After school, we had other activities like fellowship or football games. If I'm not attending fellowship, I sit on the stool designed around the hostel to watch the football matches. Food wasn't much of my problem then, it's either I'm drinking garri, or a girl is helping my life with a cooler of food, which was welcome. One thing I desired while in school was rest. I didn't like the life of a workaholic, especially some students who were up and going reading every hour. My reading time was at night, and I didn't read past an hour except if I intended to cover half a textbook. Some of my time was spent teaching other students, and the other time sleeping, but a lot changed when I entered a relationship (a story for another time).
My school life wasn't all fun, it was more of stress and one activity over another, love was what changed the story, and contributed to why the entire school life was worthwhile. But then, It wasn't bad, we had a lot of time to play with the guys in the hostel, the room drama, gist, adventure, and some days we slept hungry, all these memories combined made school a lot fun.
