I think one of those things that came as a shock to me that I didn’t expect was when I was in secondary school. What happened was that at that time we normally ate very early in the morning, by like 7 a.m., so on that fateful day I had already had my bath way before others because I wanted to just rest small before it was time for class. So I had my bath and just decided that I should take a nap. At that time, we were all kept in one long hostel and were using a double bunk, and I was sleeping under my bunk mate, so I slept off.
The next thing was that I woke up and suddenly noticed that everywhere was very bright. At first, I didn’t even understand what was happening because it didn’t feel like the normal time we usually woke up for our morning activities. I looked around and didn’t see anybody in the hostel. That was the moment the confusion started. Normally, there would always be noise, movement, or at least one or two people getting ready for class, but this time, the whole place was completely quiet.
I checked around properly and still couldn’t find anyone. My mind started racing because I was wondering if something had happened or if there was an announcement that I didn’t hear. What made it more shocking was that the entrance to the hostel was locked. That was when the reality of the situation really hit me. I was left there alone without even knowing how long I had slept for.
Immediately, I stood up from the bed, wore my clothes in a hurry, and went straight to the hostel master’s room. I explained everything to him, how I had taken my bath early, slept off, and woke up to meet an empty hostel with the door locked. Even he himself was surprised and couldn’t believe that nobody noticed I was still inside before they locked the place.
It was a very shocking experience for me because I had never been in that kind of situation before. Up till now, whenever I remember it, I still wonder how everyone left without realising that I was still sleeping inside the hostel.
