Okay so, a lot of things came to mind when I saw this topic presented as one of the prompts in the Hive Naija Community. And it’s something I resonate with so much so I couldn’t wait to talk about it. Before I do, I’ll just digress a little bit to say that today was probably one of my most stress-free Mondays. It’s probably absurd since Mondays and Stress-free sound like an oxymoron that can’t possibly be in the same sentence but yours truly had that today. I mean it could’ve been better but I try my best to be grateful for small mercies.
Moving on to the topic at hand, I’ll start by defining what pet peeves are in the way I understand. Pet peeves to me are those things that people do that you would probably have difficulty hiding your expression of disgust or irritation. Pet peeves are those little things that may be considered inconsequential but make you tick, and not in a good way. Pet peeves are those actions of people that could earn them a bombastic side-eye from you. At best.
I always felt like I was a pretty chill person. I prided myself in the fact that a lot of things didn’t or couldn’t get to me, so I was probably looked on by people as being down to earth. A few things happened which may be considered trivial but the thing about pet peeves is its uniqueness to every individual. I don’t mean that two people can’t have the same pet peeve, I’m saying that no matter how normal you think what you’re doing is, it could be another person’s pet peeve.
So first when I went to stay at my cousin’s for about a month. She had been going through a rough patch in her relationship and I came to offer her moral and emotional support. So all was nice till I noticed this thing where she didn’t wash off the soap suds in the shower room or even rinse them out from the floor. I don’t know, it just grated me to no end. I asked her casually after a few days why she didn’t do it. And she was like, “It’s no big deal, Tess. You’re just a neat freak.”
Uhmm....hello. First off, everyone who knows me knows that a neat freak is something that I’m absolutely not but that didn’t make it okay, especially when I’d wash the bathroom to be immaculate on a Saturday and she’d jump in immediately after to take a shower and when I want to take mine, the walls and floor is full of soap suds that are beginning to dry off. Really got me peeved.
The next one might be considered just plain weird but I find talking really slow a pet peeve. I’m not sure if it’s PTSD from someone but it grates on my nerves to no end. Especially with guys, sorry to say. But why are you talking like you’re competing with a sloth on who’s slower? Obviously, there are some times that slow talks are quite nice but I’m referring to when it’s perpetual. I begin to get an itch like can you please talk faster for goodness sake?
The last I’m going to mention is something that was rampant around last year and early this year I think. Luckily, it’s died down for the most part but there would be those of course that would still carry on the repulsive act. Walking around with music-blasting speakers. I mean, if we wanted to listen to music, I’m pretty sure we know just how to do it. But you just move around in a public place with your speaker, blasting anomalies everywhere. I mean, even if it’s good music, it’s still a public place and people’s rights should be respected. Everyone has their right to freedom. But when your freedom begins to infringe on mine, it becomes a problem. It's just not nice. Or respectable.
So there you go, in not so many words, a few of my pet peeves. What are yours? I’d like to know in the comments. Have a wonderful week ahead everyone.
