Gba Gba Gba.......................
The noisy sound from the town crier's gong banged on and on.
What does he has to say? The curiosity of the villagers of Ikoga Town had rose from the parallel and I literally saw it hit the peak of Mount Everest, seeing how they've all gathered round about him to hear what Mautin, the King's messenger had to delivered.
Oh ye people of Koga land,
the Aholu(King) sent his warmest greetings to you all. As you all know that, every year during this period, we pay our obeisance by celebrating the god Zangbeto, this year will be no exemption.
For those who will be interested in getting the Ankara attire for the ceremony, I beseech you to meet with Iyalode, Mautin finished his announcement with a satisfying sigh, that gave a cue of the many times he rehearsed his just said speech.
The slurping sound of dry gin as it head way to the tummies of the aged Togbho(fathers),
the rhythmic beats from the Hungonu drummers
garnished the atmosphere with liveliness
the cheering laughter of kids while flushing down morsels of Tuwo (food) with a bottle of handy Coke.
The Iyawo-ile( Wives of the land) are on standby to cease the pockets of any son or daughter of the soil, their eyes lay on.
Aweeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.............( hail the king)
In unison, the villagers would greet the Aholu has he makes way to the entrance of the courtyard, which is the place where it all goes down, alongside with his wives and subjects. Afterwards, different entertaining items follows.
However, the items that usually gains more attentions and cheering is that of the dance of the maidens and the god,Zangbeto. Come to think of it, what's there not to see?
Is it the booming voices of the maidens that could lay a bird to sleep?
Or the tweaking of their waists that could literally turn a sane man crazy?
Is it the gigantic physical appearance of the god, Zangbeto made of shreds of dry bamboo leaves?
Or his deep machismo voice that shakes the earth when he speaks?
No one would want to miss such an eventful festival for a trip to Paris, lol.
In a country named Nigeria,
in its coastal region part called Badagry
resides the people called Gunuvi
who are accustom to worship a god they named, Zangbeto before the advent of Christianity introduced by the missionaries when they came to trade with them but because of language differences and difficulties in grasping the meaning of each words said by them, the British Missionaries had no other choice than to put it on themselves to teach them. And as this persisted, they chipped in the White Religion which in turn aided the depleted numbers of people who now believe and worship it.
The god Zangbeto is celebrated yearly and is used for different courses as the case may be,few of it are;
+Used during curfew and rites
+Used during wars or battles
+It also used as an accompaniment during event of banishment.
How do I know this much?
I know this much because, I am a full breeded daughter of its soil.
