I can vividly remember how my grandma usually used herbs to treat me of different illnesses when I was younger. Growing up with Grandma was a whole lot of experience in diverse areas. You know, most of our elderly African parents hardly believe in Orthodox medicines.
This is because, before the advent of science and technology that birthed the Orthodox medicines, they were using the local herbs to cure many diseases successfully, and my grandma specifically saw buying the modern drugs as a waste of money when our God-given herbs could cure the same sickness without spending money. She also believes herbs are natural and safer than Orthodox medicines, which contain chemicals. She will hardly buy me drugs at the pharmacy whenever I am sick or take me to the hospital except for severe illness. However, what she didn't know was that they never knew the right dosage to consume those traditional medicines, and maybe too much of them can be harmful to the body system or not.
That's just her belief anyway, but the basis of most Orthodox medicines actually came from plants, roots, etc., more like having most of their active ingredients from herbs and the like before passing through processes in the pharmaceutical industry. I have used both herbs and modern medicines in the treatment of some illnesses, and in this post, I will dwell on the home remedies for cough and fever that I learned from my grandmother.
Before I proceed, I must warn that home remedies are not to be taken together with Orthodox medicines. I don't know if I am totally right by this statement, as I am not a medical doctor, but I feel that if you find any home remedies useful, then taking them at the same time with modern medicines might be complicated for the body system. Secondly, since I am not in my hometown, I do not have the original images of these remedies I am about to mention, so please bear with me.
Home remedies for treating coughs
Grandma will always get palm oil, add salt, and heat it up, then ask me to sip it warm as it reduces coughing. I must admit that for the time I tried it, I had relief. Secondly, she uses natural honey 🍯 as well. We do have access to fresh honey and not the adulterated ones. Honey has been one of the natural cough medicine I have used, and I saw a huge relief from coughing. But I know that a baby less than one year old isn't supposed to take honey. Licking honey as much as possible reduces cough in both children and adults. Also, ginger and garlic are another powerful natural cough medicine she usually prepares. The process is just peeling the back, then putting it inside ragolis and adding water to it. Leave it for 8 hours before drinking the water.
Home remedies for treating fever
This one involves lots of concoction, hahaha 😂. First , you have to get dogoyaro leaves, pawpaw leaves, and, neem tree roots, then cook them together until they boils very well. After which , you start drinking the, water morning, afternoon, and night.
There are other home remedies for different health treatments that Grandma usually prepares, but the prompt says cough and fever. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to talk about others someday.
Feel free to tell me about the home remedies for the treatment of cough and fever in your country or hometown. I am open to more knowledge.
