Drug Trafficking is a very serious offence in Nigeria and Dubai but the difference between these two nations is that in Nigeria, a drug dealer can be charged to court and if found guilty can be sentenced to imprisonment but in Dubai, a drug dealer if found guilty will be killed immediately. My report today is based on a 32 years woman that was sentenced to 15yrs imprisonment in Nigeria over drug trafficking. The news got my attention as many commented that the woman was lucky to be caught and charged in Nigeria than in Dubai.
According to the EONS Intelligence report a 32yrs old woman known as Oladitan Olufunmilayo was sentenced to a 15yrs imprisonment by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Nigeria over drug trafficking. The report has it that Oladitan Olufunmilayo 32 was arrested on November 2022 at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA. She was on her way to Dubai, United Arab Emirates before her arrest at the airport with about 106 grams of Rohypnol, 52 grams of cannabis, 47 grams of tramadol, 11 grams of methamphetamine, and 7 grams of cocaine, and all are said to highly prohibited by law in Nigeria, Dubai, and many other parts of the country.
Following the EONS Intelligence report, Augustine Nwagu who is the current National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA prosecutor declared to the court that the offenses committed by Oladitan Olufunmilayo 32 on drug trafficking should not be overlooked but brought to justice. From the report, the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State Nigeria has sentenced the victim to a 15yrs imprisonment by Justice Osiagor.
When I was carrying out research about the current happenings in Nigeria, I came across this report and the people's comment about the woman being sentenced to imprisonment was something to talk about.
I saw most comments saying that the woman was lucky to be caught and charged to court in Nigeria than in Dubai. Their view was that had it been that the woman found her way to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and was caught red-handed that she would have been a dead woman. My question was that was the woman not aware of the risk to her life taking drugs to Dubai will cost her? If she was aware of all that, I don't think she'll be able to think of taking drugs to Dubai.
Many people still commented that the woman should be forgiven instead of being sentenced to imprisonment. Their view was that the hard situations in Nigeria could be the cause of why the woman engaged herself in such a drug trafficking problem. Well, all I'll say is that law is law, and law was not made to be biased but for justice to be done.
Me, I suggest that one of the ways to prevent drug trafficking is for the government to provide more job opportunities for its citizens. I think the cost of living should be dealt with at least where the common man can afford to buy things from the market. I think this will reduce crime in the country.
