Hello InformationWar platform! I bring you news from El-Salvador and this time it's about crime fighting against gang groups terrorizing innocent citizens. Good evening!
The El-Salvador President Bukele inaugurated a new mega prison on February 24, 2023, in what he described as the biggest prison in the Americas. This is a right step in the right direction in fighting crime and gangsterism in the country.
According to him, the prison has the capacity to accommodate 40,000 inmates and what the new mega prison, crime will reduce immensely and citizens will have their normal life back without being afraid of being attacked by the gang groups terrorizing the country.
At the moment, about 2,000 gang members have been sent to the new prison and the many others are yet to be apprehended and put into the new mega prison. The idea to build a great facility like this is a good idea, but the Human Right Groups has identify that it'll be an avenue for human right violations against detainees who will be abused during detention periods.
Human rights organizations said the state of emergency Bukele has used to make the arrests has led to serious human rights violations. Among them are “mass arbitrary detention, torture and other forms of ill-treatment against detainees, deaths in custody, and abuse-ridden prosecutions”, Human Rights Watch said in a statement.
At the new facility, the men were similarly lined up before being led in large groups into their cells, where they are left sitting on the floor next to stacked metal beds. The warden told journalists while unveiling the facility that no mattresses would be provided.
“We are eliminating this cancer from society,” Justice and Public Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro said on Twitter about the inmates.
“Know that you will never walk out of CECOT, you will pay for what you are … cowardly terrorists,” he said.
Eliminating the cancer from the society to me isn't the real issue here, although doing this on its own isn't bad at all, but does the government and the police respect the rights of those citizens or did the government properly tried those gang members in court and were they found guilty for the crime and lastly, was the number of gail term in consonant with the crimes committed.
Just it was said earlier, the manner of arrest is full of human right abuses ranging from torture, mass arbitrary detention and other forms, including death of inmates during the process of detention. These are against international humanitarian laws.
What do you think about the new mega prison in El-salvador, will it increase human rights abuses?
