Greetings to everyone on the InformationWar community. Everyone in the world is being threatened by the ravaging effects of natural disasters ongoing across the world. Countries like Pakistan, India and some countries in the Sub-saharan African are experiencing heavy downpour that's causing flooding in those areas and the most frightening issues is ripple effects of the disasters after this current season. Good evening!
Two Nigerian states (Bayelsa and Delta all in the Niger Delta region) are currently threatened by a possible epidemic as residents cry's out for help as corpses floats in the city's cemeteries.
It's been weeks of heavy downpour in Southern Nigeria and this has caused flooding over the region, although, many have argued that the floods in these areas are caused by opening of the Cameroon dam some weeks ago.
As floods continue to ravage most parts of the country, residents of Aeroplane Road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State and Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta have raised the alarm over floating corpses from submerged cemeteries in their areas.
This came as several communities in Bomadi, Patani and Burutu local government areas of Delta State were yesterday sacked by the ravaging flood, with indigenes sleeping on top of Bomadi Bridge.Source
It should be noted that residents of Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta state and Yenagoa in Bayelsa state all in Southern Nigeria aren't new to flooding during the rainy season, but this year's incidents is unusual. This is because of there close proximity to the ocean.
With the exposure of corpses in the cemeteries of these respective areas, residents in Yenagoa have called on government to act faster to avoid public health crisis within the state.
On a normal day, the floods have already affected the drinking water of the state and also destroyed plants as well as the source of livelihood of residents, but what's of most importance to them is the health implications of the floating corpses to the citizens.
This year's flood is actually the most severe in the history of Nigeria, with about 603 people currently dead and about two million people displaced from their homes and hundreds hectares of farmlands destroyed. Already, most victims of the flooding incidents in Nigeria are suffering from one health challenges or the other, coupled with the effects of dead corpses on the water.
Contacted, the state commissioner for environment and chairman of Bayelsa Flood Committee, Mr. Iselema Gbaranbiri, who confirmed that three floating corpses were recovered and reburied with the environment properly fumigated.Source
From the above statement by the commissioner of environment in Bayelsa state, it shows the nature of disaster management in Nigeria. I wonder how the fumigation will help the whole state from being affected by the posing health challenges that's set to face the entire state.
I believe that what's needed at this point is international humanitarian services as well as aid to help those in internally displaced camps within and outside the states.
