In 1996, a flight of 230 people took off, and 'crashed' shortly after takeoff. I saw a trail to the plane, and told my wife the plane was shot down!

After very little time, we were told that the loss was not terrorism, but rather a catastrophic failure...it appears that the catastrophic failure was caused by a US Navy surface to air missile!

This has bothered me since I saw that trail from the ocean to the aircraft! This article confirms what I suspected, that she was shot down accidentally.
The fact that this plane was ordered to hold altitude (13,700 feet) to avoid an incoming flight, and the training operation was set up for the 'enemy' to follow this flight plan. The commercial aircraft don't normally follow such a strange flight path!
It looks like when they fired, they believed they were shooting at a drone....
The largest crime here was covering up the truth! Followed closely by the planner choosing to run a hot shoot down this close to a civilian airport...chronically stupid!
Using an abnormal flight path to 'tag' your 'ememy' drone, as the sole targeting differentiator; was obviously Not enough security, to avoid such a tragedy!
The victims families shold be compensated! The operator has tortured himself enough, he was just following a tainted 'exercise' plan! However, those who ordered the coverup; should be jailed! The person's responsible for the plan itself, should be censured; and removed from the planning process permanently! That person is criminally incompetent.
