My first step was to locate the nearest available gym close to me using my HMO, and I was able to see two gyms for my location. On a Saturday morning, I decided to visit the gym and, using Google Maps, I was able to locate the gym. However, on that particular day, they were closed, so I had to chat them up, and we were able to fix another day (which was a Monday) for me to check them out.
That Particular Monday, I went to the gym and met with the coach, and he gave me a breakdown of what I needed to do. I started the gym for the listed reasons above, but eventually, I started feeling attached to the gym and gradually became a gym bro. At first, it was not easy being consistent, but I thank God for an accountability partner.
Let me try to describe what the gym means to me.
I could remember a time when I was having an issue with my boss, and I felt as if the whole world was closing in. I had a very small circle of friends, but I did not want to bug them. So I decided to hit the gym. I go to the gym early in the morning, around 6 am, and am done by 8 am. So within these few hours, it's only me and my accountability partner, the quietness, peace, and level of comfort I get around this time simply feels like home. When I was done with working out, I was able to see the issue from a different perspective, and eventually it was resolved.
During each workout session, I always make sure to drop anything that makes me worried at the entrance because in the gym its just me and the weights and not me and the world. I feel so comfortable at the gym because my single focus is simply to overcome the current weight in front of me. Even sometimes after each workout, I feel refreshed, and I am able to see things more clearly.
The gym is simply more than a weight center; it is a place that is solely aimed at self-growth, improvement, and mental focus, as it helps me stay focused, determined, and consistent. Going to the gym has become a habit, and I try to go weekly as it is my new home. Although temporarily, it still serves as home (my safe space).
This is my entry to week 53, episode 02 of the weekly featured contest for reading, and the topic to be discussed is A PLACE THAT FEELS LIKE HOME BUT IS NOT HOME.
