In our contemporary world, human beings cannot do without their mobile devices as it has become an essential part of their daily lives. This present digital world has become so evolved that the advent of mobile phones has our lives more comfortable and accessible to several stuffs.
Mobile phones has various advantage is and disadvantages to the people using it and some of these advantages has to do with easy access to mobile banking, researching on the internet, entertainment on social media, music, movies, communication, emails, jobs, content creation and so many more.
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to most Nigerian youth if there were no digital devices because most people due to unemployment by the government have resulted to finding jobs online by becoming software developers, website builders, content creators, bloggers, vloggers, and so many more.
No doubt, people have become so addicted to their mobile phones that it has an adverse dangerous effect on their mental health, this is one of the serious negative side effects of mobile devices and there has been awareness on how people should reduce their screen time.
The issue with phone addiction is that it can affect productivity of life in several areas such as work, career, academics, daily activities and so on. It is known that phones cause distraction to people of all ages, a teenage can get distracted with social media and behave poorly in their academics, women can get distracted with movies or social media that they forget what they are cooking and it get burnt, men too can get distracted and cause an accident of some sort.
Thses distraction has caused a mental breakdown and reduced their overall performance in carrying out tasks dutifully. Again, the mobile phone addiction has become so bad for some people that it has become some sort of emotional dependency, where they rely on YouTube, Facebook, tiktok etc, to cope with stress and boredom.
This is wrong in the sense that dependency on your mobile device can bring about emotional detachment from natural resources such as connecting with the Natural World, having real time discussions with humans, engaging in activities that are stressed free and does not include screen time and so many more. So emotionally relying on your phone also she Media to take away your stress or pain can worsen your mental health instead of restoring it.
Lastly, another effect of phone addiction that I am guilty of is late night scrolling on social media or watching of movies both seasonal and drama. At some point, you would have decided that I am only going to watch one episode of this movie but in the end you find yourself watching five episodes and when you look at the time it is far spend into the night.
These addiction has become so bad that medically, the blue light from the screen affects Melanin production which is supposed to regulate our sleep, but when this is disrupted it can lead to poor sleep and you would experience tiredness and most likely body pain when you wake up.
