There are few or no one that hasn’t been vaccinated before, except they live in the wilderness or somewhere deserted. Why am I so confident saying that? I’m confident because every child that is born in a hospital or health facility is always given some certain vaccine at different intervals (most of them are free so why not?). I know there might be some children who skipped this but they are very few. Vaccines are administered to children or adults because of different researches that have been carried out on different bacteria, fungi and viruses. There are certain bacteria and viruses that have been discovered to easily affect newborns, children and adults over a long period of time hence, vaccines have been created to protect them from being affected by it.
In accordance to the sci-fi prompt for this week, we are asked to talk about vaccines by sharing our thoughts, experiences and knowledge about what vaccines are and their impact on human health. Personally, when it comes to anything hospital, I can be very reluctant about it except when I know that things are at the vertex. The last time I took vaccine was when I was around 9-14 years old. And for that vaccine, it was taken at my church meeting place. I have come to notice that when it comes to giving out vaccines, some of them are taken really seriously and that’s why here in Nigeria, you see these nurses visiting public places to give out vaccines (here we call it immunization).
Thanks to them, I was able to get vaccinated and I think that vaccine was part of the reasons why my body can easily fight back against some certain diseases that attacks my body. And I’m sure it is the same for some other people out there. Vaccines are infections kind of and these infections are what our bodies can most times easily handle. The question now is, why should anyone infect people all in the name of vaccinating them? Well, in simple terms, these vaccines are given to us so our body can recognize some certain bacteria and viruses that might be harmful to us and then build a fortified immunity against it.
Vaccines are made up of different bacteria or viruses or other micro organisms that might be harmful to us. There are different types of vaccines and depending on why you are getting a particular vaccine, the main goal of every vaccine is to keep your immune system aware of certain possible diseases and the body is able to store that information and put a tag or so on the micro organism so that the next time when it comes it will easily know how to deal with it without you even knowing what is going on.
Sometimes our body already have knowledge of some bacteria or virus before taking a vaccine so we might not feel any after effects but other times it might not be so. Sometimes when a vaccine is administered to a body that hasn’t experienced such a bacteria or virus before, the body might tend to react to it for some days or few hours and that’s why sometimes even after taking some vaccines, we still fall or feel sick. But once we recover from that sickness, it will be hard for our bodies to breakdown because of that virus or bacteria again as long as we stay vaccinated at the time stipulated.
Here in Nigeria, a lot of persons refused to be vaccinated with the coronavirus vaccine and that’s because some persons who took the vaccine fell sick even after taking it. At that time, I didn’t understand what vaccines were and how they work so I was in support of those who didn’t want to take it (I didn’t take it). Now that I have learnt more about how the human body works and functions, I have been able to understand why it was so. Indeed, knowledge is power and until we know some things, we will just keep acting ignorantly. Vaccines are advised to be taken. Yes, it is possible to fall sick after taking a vaccine depending on the nature of your body’s immune system.
By taking vaccines, you fortify your body against some diseases and also keep yourself healthy. The major superstition about vaccines is that it doesn’t work because some people fall sick after taking it. But I’m very sure by now you know and understand better why it might happen that way sometimes.
