culture as means of identity. Culture is the total way of people's life, basically the way you and the people around you do things.
Over time, we have seen several cultures, and we have seen some of these cultures evolve. Culture could be seen as a means of identifying where a person comes from their roots.
Culture could be in the form of dressing, food, values, language, way of life, and much more.
In Nigeria, there are several cultures and many ways they can be displayed.
During festivals, different tribes display their culture through their dressing. In Africa, for example, you could see different Ankara designs and various styles of attires. Some require caps, some require wearing beads. The hairstyle and the footwear also add to the culture in terms of appearance.
Culture could also be displayed through food. Nigerian food is one of the most interesting and exciting parts of our culture. The diversity of tribes in Nigeria has given rise to a wide range of traditional meals, each with its own taste, method of preparation, and significance.
In my culture, some of the popular local foods are abacha (also known as African salad), and several soups like egusi, oha, onugbu (bitter leaf soup), and ofe akwu (palm nut soup). These are not just meals they carry meaning and are often connected to occasions, seasons, and even family traditions.
The Yoruba people are known for dishes like amala and ewedu, ofada rice, and iyan (pounded yam). The Hausa enjoy tuwo shinkafa, miyan kuka, and suya. Each of these meals has a history and reflects the people’s way of life.
Generally, in Nigeria, there are several staple foods like rice, yam, beans, and cassava that showcase the Nigerian culture in different forms. From jollof rice and moi moi to porridge yam and akara, the flavors of Nigeria tell a story of unity in diversity. Food brings people together. It is common to see a Yoruba person enjoy oha soup or an Igbo person eating tuwo proof that food connects us beyond language and tribe.
Language is another popular display of culture. The major languages in Nigeria are Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba. Each of these languages represents massive and rich cultures. There are many other tribes in Nigeria and most of them have their own languages. Language is really crucial because it is one major way people identify with their culture.
Other ways culture is displayed are style of greeting, the marriage rites and ceremonies, and the style of celebration.
Variety is the spice of life, and that applies to culture. There are many cultures out there and that's what makes it beautiful. Every culture is unique and has something valuable to learn about. I believe there's beauty in the diversity culture brings.
Culture gives that sense of belonging. It's a way to identify with where you come from. Nothing can take the place of culture. Nigerian food remains one of the most delicious ways we showcase that culture. It reminds us of home, of who we are, and of what makes Nigeria truly special.
