The Sci-fi multiverse prompt episode 2 is “Marriage Fever.” Marriage is filled with complexities. If only African parents knew how complex marriage is for this generation, they wouldn't force their children to get married. Perhaps, some of them are aware of these complexities, but are blinded by culture and societal dictations. We live in a society where expectations come first. Parents put the pressure of “you’re supposed to be married by now” above their children’s actual feelings. Some even take it to the extreme, comparing their kids to peers in the same age range who got married. Not only is this annoying and painful, but it is also ruining people’s mental health.
Marriage fever has become a thing in most countries. The question is; why exactly is there marriage fever? Why are parents rushing their children to get married? I think the pressure is even heavier on females. They believe a woman should be married before a certain age, probably because of the fear of menopause. I don't know if there are other reasons. And then, it gets to a point where some parents will start playing the matchmaking game with their children. What if you force your child to get married and in the end, they end up with the wrong person; someone who makes the marriage miserable for them? Not getting married at all is better than getting married to the wrong person.
The community also asks if we have ever been worried about marriage fever going around. For some reason, I have never been worried about marriage fever and I think it is because my parents are not the kind to make a big deal out of a delicate issue. Knowing them, they would allow me to follow my heart, not force me to make a decision I might later regret in life.
Lastly, what comes to mind when I see my friends getting married and it’s not working for me? Well, marriage isn’t something I want to get into right now, so I can’t say it isn’t working for me. However, many of my friends from high school and university have gotten married. Honestly, I’m happy for them and I wish them the best.
