In one of the topic being treated last week was "the mind." And I can tell you for free that I'm very well impressed with it. I've even been doing some little more research about the human mind and all of that, but now is not the time to talk about it. Even still, while writing last week I very well recall that I added while concluding that the human mind is a mystery and that we process things differently and that's how we all have been tackling and writing on the various prompts in the past and even the forthcoming ones because we all have our individual mind and perspective.
In light of that, this is another new topic and I've really taken my time to ponder on it even though it looks simple on the surface. But I will like to add that as we all have our individual minds and perspective to things, this little I will be writing below is my own personal opinion.
First off, y'all will agree with me that the world is no longer how it used to be. A lot of things has changed. And the change I'm talking of is now that almost every Nigerian is facing at the moment, talking of insecurity. And the level of insecurity we are facing today is one that kept reminding us that we really need to know how to protect and defend ourselves when situations require that we do. So, I will like to say first that it's good to know how to, at least know the basics and the ways in which you can defend yourself when the need arise. I won't want to feel much on that since I'm not insinuating that we become a bad or violent person.
Also, I would like to add that not all self-defense requires that we fight and engage in fist and the usage of arms. There are simple things that count as self defense too and I think that's what my focus will be on.
Being aware is a form of self defense, being aware of where you're and the environment you're in. Being aware of the kind of people you're around as well. When I'm amidst strangers or travel to a new place, I try as much as possible to stay alert and pay attention to every single thing. That kind of mind will help one to notice things and be careful.
Another thing is speaking up, it's good that we make use of our voice when we sense danger. When anyone's trying to intimidate me or harass me, I don't keep quiet. I either shout to draw attention or shout to scare them away. Most of this attackers will feel safe enough to do whatever they want and hurt or harm you when they have intimidated you to an extent that you fear to make use of your voice. Some can argue that it might be dangerous at times, but I can as well say using your voice can as well make a big difference too.
And about if self-defense should be taught in school, I will gladly say yes. The world has changed, unlike before where kids can go to school and return home using shortcuts and all, today nowhere is safe, including highways. So, some simple things like knowing how to escape from a grip, knowing how to run, seeking for safety how to speak up or shout and maybe even the best place to hit your attacker so he/she gets destabilized, or even some distracting techniques to use on them should be taught. Like I said earlier, I'm not insinuating or encouraging violence, but we need to be safe and be taught certain safety precautions.
Personally I've never been in a serious fight with anyone before, not at all. But there have been a lot of instances where being aware of the environment and people that I am around have helped me to stay of out of trouble. And like they used tod ssy about pregnancy that abstinence is the best, sms goes to this as well as prevention is also the best protection.
In conclusion, learning self-defense is necessary, not because we are going out with the mindset of causing harm, but because we are at a stage where we really need to be prepared wherever we go.
