We have several social media platforms that keep them busy, such as TikTok, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, which offer avenues for communication and entertainment. All these social media platforms have their advantages. Still, as numerous as their advantages are, there are also significant challenges that cannot be overlooked concerning the mental health of young people.
For adolescents, social media provides a platform to express themselves and connect with peers. It offers opportunities to build relationships with people beyond their geographical zones, especially those who feel alone in their offline environments. There are many fighting with some kind of disease or mental instability who find solace in communities online that help them grow and understand themselves better. This kind of connection helps foster recovery and gives them a sense of belonging.
Social media can be a source of education, awareness, and a source of income. Many adolescents are on these platforms not only for entertainment but to learn and make judicious use of them to their benefit. In our world today, we have young individuals who are doing well for themselves due to the help of some of these social media platforms. Some use these platforms to advertise their businesses which exposes them to the world beyond their local areas and has helped their businesses grow faster.
As good as these social media platforms are, they pose some risks to the mental health of adolescents. One of the most prominent ones is the rise in anxiety and depression among teenagers. Their exposure to idealised images and lifestyles often leads to unhealthy comparisons and feelings of inadequacy. Adolescents might feel pressured due to the things they see online from their role models and celebrities, which can increase stress and reduce self-esteem.
Cyberbullying is another major concern; online harassment is common in this generation and reaches a wider audience, leaving victims feeling trapped and overwhelmed. Many adolescents suffer in silence due to fear and shame or the popular belief that nothing can be done. This form of harassment leads to depression, anxiety, and, in extreme cases, suicidal thoughts, which greatly affect the mental health of the victim. Many adolescents post things online but the feedback from the audience wasn't what they expected, thus causing self-hate at times because of the terrible comments.
Apart from these mentioned points, excessive use of social media deters sleep, reduces academic performance, and affects overall well-being. Many adolescents stay up at night surfing from one platform to another and not doing anything productive. In the end, results in addiction.
To reduce the harmful effects of social media on adolescents, parents, and educators should educate young people about the responsible use of social media. Also, all these social media platforms should take responsibility for user safety. Policies against cyberbullying will create a healthier environment. Adolescents should also be advised and encouraged to partake in offline activities which can also help critical thinking and add to their productivity.
While social media is a powerful tool for connection, it also presents significant risks to adolescents' mental health. With the right support, education, and awareness, adolescents can learn to navigate social media in ways that enhance rather than damage their mental health and emotional well-being.
