Health, they say, is wealth. People often don’t realise the value of their health until they fall ill, at which point they tend to be careless about their health. Even when they are advised to take good care of their health, they still ignore it. It is usually advisable to visit the hospital for regular check-ups to monitor one's health status, and if there is a cause for concern, it should be addressed promptly. This is so because most of these illnesses, when discovered early, can be easily treated or managed.
While some diseases have a permanent cure, some diseases are incurable and can only be managed, giving the patient more time before the disease is fatal. Some of these diseases include certain cancers, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis B.
I could remember when the HIV/AIDs viral disease became very popular. I was still in primary school at that time; a lot of lives were lost from the disease; this disease was the cause of the death of my aunt and her husband, making my cousin an orphan at a very early age. It was a very tragic period for my mother, as it was for my family. This was the first time in my life I saw my mother crying. She became inconsolable at the time.
Recently, my friend lost his mother to cancer (leukaemia), according to the research we all invest our time doing, her type of cancer was not as dangerous as the rest. Hearing this news, we were all relieved, but the unfortunate event happened, and a few months into her sickness, she passed on. It was a traumatising event for the family, including me. To our thinking, she was getting better, not knowing that she had just a few days left with us.
If I had the power and knowledge to create a cure for a disease, my disease choice would be cancer. The reason for my choice is that cancer happens as a result of a change in DNA, disrupting the cells in the human body from growing normally. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, and the treatment for this disease is too expensive for the poor and average individuals; one will say it is a disease that only a wealthy person can afford. This disease affects both the young and old, causing them to suffer severely. If I am granted the power to create a cure for any disease, I will stick to the cure for cancer.
