Hello everyone. Welcome to my blog.
Honestly, it is not easy living as a student in this current economy. In contrast to the salary earners, a lot of us depend on our parents for financial support. And due to the high cost of things, that support is no longer enough. The prices of food, school expenses, transportation and basic needs keep increasing nonstop and the allowance we get from our parents remains the same.
Sincerely it's overwhelming but to survive in my country Nigeria you must do what i call “economise”.
THIS IS HOW I'VE LEARNED TO MANAGE FOR SURVIVAL.
FIRSTLY BUDGETING:
Budgeting is important but trust me it's not easy. I know you might be wondering how I manage to divide my small allowance. My number 1 priority is food. I'm a lover of food and I don't joke with my stomach.
I will save up for school materials e.g handout (my fellow Nigerians can relate to the importance of handouts to some lecturers. More like their birth right)😂😂 And lastly transportation. I prioritise these essential things before thinking about anything else.
I've learned to stop spending unnecessarily. I also love snacks but i had to reduce it.
It's hard seeing your fellow colleagues living comfortably but i have to remain disciplined.
SECONDLY SAVING:
No matter how little, I try to save for unexpected situations. I save mostly for school needs. Sometimes the department needs to get some materials in the lab. And in a situation whereby the school didn't make provisions the students will have to contribute money to get the materials.
All this are emergency needs that I don't necessarily have to call my parents. Because i have saved for it. It's my own little way of assisting my parents too.
LASTLY SIDE HUSTLE:
I remembered during my O level days when my mum will pressure me to learn a skill. I thought I was being punished.
But getting to higher institution I realised I actually needed it. I witnessed some of my colleagues surviving with there skill in school and I felt bad for acting stubborn. But it was not too late for me so I took my time, make my research and I found a skill I love which is “CROCHET”.
I'm glad I learned a skill and it really helped me financially in school.
In conclusion the goal is not just for survival but to build habit for future purpose. I mean to survive as a student in this hard economy requires, strategy, creativity and discipline. Yeah! I know it's not easy but it's manageable. And I believe this habits we've build will help us when we start making our own income in the future.
Thanks for stopping by.
Bye for now.
