The fields of our rural Bengal are now adorned with golden colors. The fragrant smell of ripe rice is all around and the busyness of the farmers. This is perhaps the eternal form of Bengal. This excitement of harvesting rice reminds us that agriculture is the lifeblood of our economy. However, behind this festive atmosphere lies a hidden anxiety.
Currently, the rice harvesting festival is going on in every field in our area. From morning to evening, farmers are busy in the field with sickles in hand. Cutting rice, tying it in bundles and bringing it home, and then threshing it is all a divine act. Preparations for the Nabanna festival with new rice are also going on in some places. This activity of village life is really worth seeing.
Unfortunately, nature is in a bit of a hostile mood this time. For the past few days, the sky has been cloudy and there have been sudden rains. When ripe paddy is lying in the field, a single rain means a huge loss for the farmer. If rainwater accumulates, the paddy plant can rot, and if the paddy is threshed while wet, its quality is lost. The market does not get a fair price for that paddy.
The farmer spends his entire year's hard work and the last of his savings on this crop. At this last moment of harvesting, the fear of rain has robbed them of sleep. Therefore, everyone is trying their best to quickly cut the paddy and bring it home due to the fear of rain. Everyone, young and old, in the neighborhood is helping the farmers so that the crops can be taken to a safe place before the rain.
Just as nature gives us abundant gifts, it also tests us sometimes. We pray that the weather will improve soon and the farmers can bring home their hard-earned crops with a smile. A smile on the farmer's face means a smile on the face of the entire country.
