Good morning, friends from Hiva. Continuing with Venezuelan traditions and sonnets, it is appropriate for this date, Thursday, Corpus Christi, to present a sonnet from the Dancing Devils festival of Venezuela. This sonnet poetically captures the diversity of devils found throughout Venezuela and promotes its recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2012.

Sonnet to the tradition of Los Diablos Dancers of Venezuela
by Orlando Paredes
On Corpus Christi, dancing devils of Yare
drums of maracas and snare drums
steps that cross crosses that fit
devotees to the Blessed Sacrament and altars
Naiguatá and its similar devils
promisers with beliefs that travel
their masks, cowbells, and rattles
to the sacrament across hills and seas
In Tinaquillo and Turiamo, the cuatro
sets the tone in the choreography
as does their music and theater
Cata, Cuyagua, San Millán today
San Rafael and Chuao are so pleasant
and even more so, they are heritage sites and brotherhoods.
