This week at the University of Arts, we had the opportunity to attend a masterclass on porcelain painting taught by artist Carola Karam. She gave us an insight into the history of porcelain, which began in China and how this ancient artistic practice has spread throughout the world. She explained that she doesn't work with porcelain; she only uses a special paint for painting on ceramics. Esta semana en la universidad de artes, tuvimos la oportunidad de recibir un masterclass sobre "pintura en porcelana" dictada por la artista Carola Karam, quien nos adentró en la historia de la porcelana que nace en China y como se ha ido distribuyendo por todo el mundo esta práctica artística ancestral. Ella nos explica que no trabaja la porcelana, solo la interviene con una pintura especial para pintar sobre cerámica.
Carola Karam presented us with a variety of pieces that she worked with an oxide-based pigment brought from Europe, since they don't make that type of pigment here in Venezuela. The pieces included dinnerware sets, vases, ashtrays, and other very interesting pieces. Carola Karam nos presentó una variedad de piezas que intervino con un pigmento a base de óxidos traído de Europa, ya que aquí en Venezuela no fabrican ese tipo de pigmentos; entre las piezas había juegos de vajillas, jarrones, ceniceros, entre otras piezas muy interesantes.
He also gave a live presentation while explaining the process that must be followed after applying the paint to the porcelain: the piece must be baked so that the pigment adheres to the material. After that, the object can be used not only as an exhibition piece, but also for everyday use (for example, the plates can be used for eating normally after the pigment has gone through the baking process). También hizo una intervención en vivo mientras nos explicaba el proceso que hay que seguir luego de aplicar la pintura sobre la porcelana, hay que hornear la pieza para que el pigmento se adhiera a el material, después de eso el objeto se puede usar no solo como pieza expositiva, sino en un uso cotidiano (por ejemplo, los platos se pueden usar para comer con normalidad luego de que el pigmento haya pasado por el proceso de horneado).
At the end of her presentation, artist Carola Karam decided to give away two of the pieces she had brought to show. It was a wonderful time sharing with her and learning from her experience in art. I had never imagined the process of creating this type of artwork; I truly loved having this opportunity to meet and see a live demonstration of her work. These meetings with artists will become more frequent at the university and will motivate the Unearthist community to delve deeper into the art world. I hope you enjoy this post. Good vibes. La artista Carola Karam al final de su presentación decidió regalar dos de sus piezas que trajo para mostrar, fue un momento muy agradable compartir con ella y aprender de su experiencia en el arte, nunca me había imaginado como era el proceso para crear este tipo de piezas artísticas; de verdad me encanto poder tener esta oportunidad de conocer y ver una muestra en vivo de su trabajo. Estos encuentros con artistas se harán más frecuente en la universidad y motivaran a la comunidad uneartista para adentrarse de lleno en el mundo del arte; espero que este post sea de su agrado, buenas vibras.
