I Am Always Sad To See Summer's Demise ..
It had arrived gently this year, instead of smacking us with a dreadful heat without warning. We actually had somewhat of a Spring. Then the heat and humidity becomes a common day occurrence, dragging out those long hot summer days. By mid September, I am ready for a change in the norm. I am ready for Autumn's approach and all she brings with her.
Welcome October! ..
Welcome cool, crisp, Northern air from Canada. Welcome to the shorter days bringing color to our deciduous trees like the Maples and Oaks. Welcome pumpkins, gourds, mums, straw bails and corn stalk adorned front porches. Welcome Trick-Or-Treaters', ghouls, goblins, and Halloween fanatics.
Welcome to Autumn! Things are changing here in the Northeast. Days ARE getting shorter and the mornings are a bit cooler than they were a few weeks ago. Although the leaves are just now beginning to show a tinge of color, the real show is still a few weeks off. When I look around, as I am driving to work, I see it in the farm fields.
Even the cold season crops, such as cabbage, are looking thin and picked over. The farmers will be plowing these fields under soon, preparing to plant a cover crop in anticipation of the strong, cold winter winds. The Soybean crops are starting to tun yellow, and by the end of the month they too will be brown and ready for the farmers harvest.
Yesterday I noticed the vineyard a bustle (and did not get a photo) with employees hustling to harvest every grape before the fall of night. Tractors were toting bins full of purple sweetness, soon to be pressed and fermented into the nectar of gods.
Feed corn, planted in straight narrow rows, ceases to grow and has turned a shade of brown. It's stiff, dry leaves, crackle and chatter with even the lightest of breezes that blow though her stalks. Sometime later this fall, before the first snowfall, combines will enter the fields to eat up those stalks, separate out the corn kernels, and then spit out whats left. I like seeing the brown rows of corn just as much as the lush green rows, because it means fall is here.
What Do You Love About Fall? ..
Among those things that I listed above, I also like spending time with my wife and Molly. Although we enjoy the occasional hike to see that colorful foliage up close and personal, a casual stroll through our own back yard or neighborhood does just fine. The extra chill in the air, along with the smell of an outdoor fire, puts that little extra pep in our step.
Having a pint (or 2 or 3 or 4) of Oktoberfest beer, ranks right up there as one of those things I enjoy about the season. Nothing like sitting around a fire, or sitting in a pub with friends, enjoying the tastes of the season. It's like having the month of October poured right into a mug.
Frost will be arriving soon. This is NOT something I am looking forward to, but it does bring a touch of beauty to those things I do like to see. I can't help but smile when I see the first frost touch those colorful fallen leaves, now outlined with cold crystal shards of dew.
With the arrival of these changes to my environment, and the new found energy that invigorates me, I also find myself inspired. I feel the ting of inspiration to create. Maybe that will come out in the form of a drawing, sketch, or painting. Why not harness those smells, the chill in the air, the positive feelings and, of course, those colors, and focus them into a creative work of art.
I always enjoy painting at least one work during the season, and maybe even more if time doesn't get away from me. Trees seem to be my favorite thing to paint. I have always been drawn to painting trees. I'll show you a few examples of this below. They are all painted from my imagination; an accumulation of autumn memories, feed the artistic side of my brain. Those memories and experiences from Octobers' past, are transformed and interpreted with paint.
A colorful tree resting at the edge of a field ready fro harvest.
More Trees.. Fiery Maples and bright autumn leaves, ready to fall and color the ground yellow and red.
YES, another tree. An established Oak making her fall presence know to all.
An Apple! Apple picking and apple cider.. other things that remind me of fall and bring smiles to faces.
A field of Sunflowers, taking a last look at the late day sun. They too shall be harvested this fall and eaten all winter long.
What shall I paint this year.. a tree .. a pumpkin.. a poetic interpretation of fall and all her glory. Maybe a crisp, golden beer!
Autumn Too Shall End ..
When the days of October end, November will swiftly walk into our life, bringing with her turkey, football and the possibility of an early snowfall. She's not here yet! I don't want to rush it just yet. I want to enjoy the here and now. Autumn and all her splendor.
I have to say though, I am looking forward to those beautiful, crisp, brilliant winter sunsets.. oh yeah, they're inspirational all by themselves.
Thank you for swinging by my blog and checking out the post. Have a great day!
“Her pleasure in the walk must arise from the exercise and the day, from the view of the last smiles of the year upon the tawny leaves and withered hedges, and from repeating to herself some few of the thousand poetical descriptions extant of autumn--that season of peculiar and inexhaustible influence on the mind of taste and tenderness--that season which has drawn from every poet worthy of being read some attempt at description, or some lines of feeling.”

About Me ~ The Artist
My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.
Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.
For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.
