Many of you are probably going to laugh at me for being so late to the party on this one. In fact, I have had it sitting in my "to watch" queue for quite some time on Netflix. I was actually shocked the other day when I started watching it and I noticed that there was already four seasons or so.
I know it is a bit isolationist of me to say, but it is only in the past year or so that my wife and I have brought ourselves to start watching some of the foreign shows on Netflix. It started with me watching "Dark" and then together we watched "Money Heist". Therefore, it didn't bug me too much when I realized that "The Protector" was also going to be one of those shows with overdubbed voices.
It still drives us crazy when the lips don't match up with the voice that is coming out of them, but it is far better to deal with that then having to read subtitles through the whole thing.
I am going to try to give an honest review of this show without spoiling anything, but since it has already been on for so many seasons, it may not matter too much if I do. I am still only on the first season.
I am actually a bit surprised that hasn't reviewed this yet. Maybe he did and I just missed it....
When it boils down to it, I personally really like this show. I think this is some of the best work I have seen by Netflix with overdubbing. It also appears since this show is about Turkey they have used a large number of Turkish actors/actresses which is also pretty cool.
If you watch the trailer below, it explains a lot of what is going on. There is this average guy who works around the Grand Bazaar and he soon learns that his life has a much larger purpose than he ever imagined.
He is The Protector, the latest in a long line of people entrusted with the safety of Istanbul (because basically Istanbul is the center of the world or something like that). I've never been to Istanbul, so I don't really understand the significance. It's probably since it is a Turkish show. If it were an American show, it would probably be NYC or something like that.
Tiny Spoiler
I think they cover it in the trailer, but even if you watch the first episode you will see there is a shirt that plays a pretty significant role in the show. They don't take long in letting you know that when the protector is wearing the shirt, he is invulnerable. My biggest issue with this is he always has to put the shirt on throughout the show. If I were the protector, I would just leave the thing on all the time. I'd eat, sleep, bathe, and have sex with the thing on.
Maybe in a later episode they explain why he needs to continuously take it off and put it back on again, but so far I haven't seen that.
I am excited to dig into the further seasons of this show. Although some of the stuff is not very believable (okay, most of it) and I have a feeling I know what one of the big plot twists is going to be already, I really dig the characters. They are very like-able and not to sound too shallow, they have done a great job of casting talent that is quite appealing to watch (if you know what I mean). Man, I feel dirty for even mentioning that part now.
If you are looking for some good laughs, decent action, and something a little different than the norm, check out The Protector on Netflix.
