As I mentioned in this post yesterday, I am going to be splitting the two trips and I took into the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan into several small posts. I don't want to overwhelm you with the magnificence of Michigan all at once!
We got started fairly early on Saturday morning because we knew we were going to be on the road for quite a while.
We had everything packed away in our travel trailer the night before and I had everything hooked up to the truck so we could pretty much just hop in and head on our way.
Google was telling us that the trip was going to take about 6.5 hours to drive, but pulling a trailer you have to go a little slower than normal. Especially up the hills or if it is windy.
We made it to the Mackinac Bridge pretty easily. I will reference that post from yesterday again if you want to see some pictures of the bridge. If you missed it, it really is a quite good read.
There are two towns on either side of the bridge. The Southern town in the Lower Peninsula is called Mackinaw City (you'd have to Google it to find why it is spelled different from the bridge). The town on the North side of the bridge in the UP is called St. Ignace.
We stopped in St. Ignace to get some gas and then we attempted to get some food since it was right around 11:30.
The drive-in diner that we usually like to visit was packed and they were only running car hop service or take out orders. I found a postage stamp of space to fit the truck and trailer into and we tried to call in our order. Unfortunately, the voice mailbox was full and we had to change our plans.
We headed down to McDonald's and parked. I walked up to the building only to find out they were only running drive through service. There was no way to get our truck and trailer through the drive through, so we got on the road and headed out of town.
The drive down US 2 heading West out of St. Ignace is really quite beautiful in some places. The picture above is from a three to four mile stretch just outside of town. On a nice day cars will be parked end to end on both sides of the road with people sitting on the beach or swimming.
This morning was a little blah (in fact we had to limit our speed to 25 MPH over the bridge due to the high winds) so you don't seen many people in this picture.
While I was driving, my wife was searching for a place we could get lunch.
Luckily she found this gem of a place just past the Cut River Bridge. We called in our order from the road and it was ready for me to pick up when we got there. We ate it in our truck before continuing on our way (since we still had about four hours to travel).
She got the club sandwich with onion rings and I got the patty melt with fries.
I am kind of kicking myself now that I didn't get the whitefish, but both of our sandwiches were really good and that gives me something to look forward to next time we visit. Trust me, we will definitely visit this place again.
After about another half hour on US 2 we turned North and headed towards the Southern coast of Lake Superior. This takes you through the small towns of Seney and Munising.
These (along with the opening photo) are just some of the views you get on that drive...
Eventually, you pass through Marquette which we visited last year and then the Lake Michigamme area. Finally, after passing by the small town of L'Anse, MI we turned along the coast that starts leading up the Keweenaw peninsula.
We pulled into Baraga State Park just about eight hours after we left our house that morning. We quickly got our trailer set up and settled in before a quick rain storm blew through. We were both exhausted and in need of some relaxation after the long travel day.
