In recent days we have been treated by mother nature to one beautiful sunrise after another beautiful sunset. I could do these photos every day and all are gorgeous. Red skies, pink glow and the big orange sun disappearing behind the horizon. It feels exceptional. But how? How do these beautiful skies arise?
The sunlight is scattered in the atmosphere during the route to the earth and broken by dust particles or water vapor. As a result, the naturally white sunlight is dissected into different colors. The atmosphere scatters the light to all sides and gives the soft blue color that we see when we look at the sky, because blue light scatters much more than red light. That is why we do not see the red part of the light during the day. The sun is low in the sky during sunrise and sunset. Because of this, the rays of the sun have to travel a long way through the atmosphere to reach us. This longer path provides even more scattering of the blue light. When the light reaches us, so much blue light is scattered that the blue is "gone". You will first see a yellow / orange color and later only red. Does the cloud cover it too?

In recent weeks there have often been clouds in the sun during sunrise and sunset. In many cases this was a high cloud. This so-called veil cloud is thin and consists of many ice crystals. When the sunlight shines through, you get beautiful discolorations. And than it’s my fun to take pictures, and blog with it.
