This is my hive at 5 for today,
Our neighbour has 3 horses and they rotate in different meadows so we are lucky when they are near, and because we are allowed to walk the dogs we have the opportunity to go to these 3 beauties.
I will goo and feed them carrots and apples and today little D , the animal lover went with me, and we took the bike. Eventhough it a 2 minute ride to the fence where they are, we have the idea to have a outting during these inside days.
We take them apples and carrot as i said.
Carrots and apples have traditionally been given to horses as a reward. It is seen as a healthy alternative to a sugar cube. In the winter months, when winter roots are readily available and therefore often not as expensive, they are sometimes used as supplementary food. Because fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals, it is quickly assumed that it is a healthy reward for the horse.
However, fruit is especially high in sugar. An excess of sugars can easily cause (gas) colic and laminitis. In addition, the risk of stomach ulcers is also increased, because some of the sugars are already processed in the stomach, resulting in a drop in pH. This drop causes stomach contents to become more acidic and makes the stomach more prone to stomach ulcers. It is therefore prudent not to give any fruit to horses suffering from stomach ulcers, laminitis or insulin resistance.
Fruit and vegetables have a relatively high moisture content. As a result, it can be useful to add fruit or vegetables in the winter months, as horses tend to drink less water and thus receive some extra moisture. Carrots are very suitable for this, for example, because they have a low nutritional value and are low in sugar compared to other fruit and vegetables. Horses, however, may receive a maximum of about 1.2 to 2 kilos of carrots per 100 kilos of body weight per day. For an adult horse of 600 kilos, this means about 7.2 to 12 kilos of carrots per day. Note that fruits and vegetables can freeze quickly due to the high moisture content, causing them to rot faster. In addition, they also mold quickly. To prevent health problems (such as colic and poisoning) you should therefore never feed moldy or rotten fruit and vegetables.
We said goodbey to Fred, Leila and Sjors. We had 45 minutes of fresh air, made photos for a blog, love from three huge sweethearts and 4 minutes of cycling..... Life is good!
