Today the largest ship in the world is in Rotterdam. We are one of the biggest harbours from Europe, and a big player for freight and cargo. This largest container ship in the world the 'HMM Algeciras' calls at the port of Rotterdam for container delivery, it arrived today and will leave the port of Rotterdam on Saturday.
The ship can carry just a little more 20-foot containers than its predecessor MSC Gülsün: 23,964 TEU against 23,756 TEU. HMM Algeciras has 19,621 TEU on board during the voyage and that is also a record.
The Korean ship was delivered on April 24 by the shipyard Daewoo Shipping & Marine Engineering's Okpo. It is 400 meters long and 61 meters wide. The ship is from Yantian and leaves for Hamburg on June 6 at 5:00 am, the biggest ship was a touristic feast for people in the harbour.
HMM is the short new name for Hyundai Merchant Marine. The South Korean ship owner is the ninth container shipping company in the world. The shipping company still has eleven of these 24,000 TEU ships on order to conquer the world.
When you are near the harbour there is always a ship that will attract your attentention. We also have a lot of cruiseships in our harbour these days, i did some blogs about them because that part of Rotterdam we love to visit often.
