What's buzzing, friends?

Gifts have a way of making people feel special and appreciated. They are a thoughtful way to show someone you care, and they can be a great way to bond people together. Whether you’re giving a gift to a friend, family member, or loved one, the act of giving a gift can be a very special moment.

This act can also extend to nation-states and people of power too. Today, let's talk about the "Resolute Desk". This is the desk that resides in the Oval Office and what the president of the United States uses for their day-to-day actions of the state. If you did not know any better, you would just see a desk. But there is a story behind that desk - a story of gifting.

To learn this story, you must know about the old wooden ship, the HMS Resolute. This ship set sail one fateful day and got stranded in the frozen north. She was abandoned in 1854. America then set a team to retrieve this ship. As per Maritime law, the ship was legally American as it was abandoned. However, America repaired this ship, then gifted it back to the British Royal Navy.

The ship served in the British Royal Navy ‘til 1879. After this, it was salvaged for timber. The timber that was salvaged was used to build a few desks. One of these desks was gifted back to America and is the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office today!

Wow, from being stranded in ice, to being repaired, gifted, then gifted back, it's a desk with a lot of history and meaning. Perhaps it's also why America and Britain share a strong bond? Could it be simple as the gift of a desk?
