Wednesday marks the mid-point of the working week and the run into the weekend and it seems the perfect time to stop and think. #whatsupwednesday is a snapshot of what's been going on, or will be, in my week based on a little thought and reflection.
The burn
With winter having set in it's been reasonably cold; it's not Scandinavia-cold, I'm in Australia after all, but it's been cold enough to be uncomfortable and not want to get out of bed in the morning, especially to go to work. Still, I've dutifully done so with an eye firmly on the weekend, now only a couple days away.
This weekend I've got a firepit planned and I've been getting things ready over the last couple of days. This basically it means gathering the wood and kindling, cleaning off benches and chairs around the firepit and working out some food for the night.
I'm fairly particular about the wood I burn meaning it has to be well-seasoned and bone dry as that means less smoke and more heat. I know, it's a bit OCD of me, but if you were here around one of my firepits you'd thank me, they are glorious! I also need to get the grill thing sorted so I've been doing that stuff after work for a couple days. OK, I'll be honest, there's not that much to do in reality; I'm embellishing.
The burgers
I'm making beef burgers for dinner and will be searing the flesh upon the fire, on a removeable grill. The burgers themselves will be home made with a couple of secret ingredients I can't tell you about...Because they are secret; my burgers are tasty though, slightly spicy and just plain old awesome! You'll have to trust me on that...Unless you got an invite in which case you'll taste them for yourself Saturday night.
Of course I'll have all the other stuff too: Buns, lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, onions, tomato sauce, mayonnaise and so on. I'm also baking potato wedges in the oven which will be seasoned with chicken salt. I'm hoping to do some crumbed onion rings as well but that'll depend on the time-factor. It'll probably happen though. Basically I'll be laying out all the food and my bro's will be able to do what they want, make their own burgers and stuff; I'm not their slave after all, and they're capable.
I'm feeding four of my good mates and I'll get beaten to a bloody pulp if there's not enough food so I'm working around the premise of having way more than I'll need. If you don't hear from me after Saturday night you'll know there wasn't enough food and I was brutally murdered by my bro's.
The bro's
The chaps coming over are ex-military blokes, except for one who is still serving; a Captain in the 1st Armoured Regiment, Australian Army. He commands three M1A1 Abrams tanks and is a pretty legit-funny dude we call Fatty because he's buff as fuck and not fat at all - It's a reverse-reality nickname thing. He's in town for some military stuff hence the gathering - Getting the five of us together is rare so I'm looking forward to it.
One good thing with the blokes coming around is that I won't need to get too fancy - It's not a dinner party, just a few fella's sitting around a fire searing flesh and eating it between some buns, having a few drinks and telling a whole lot of bullshit whilst retelling stories from the good old days and talking about now and the future.
I'm looking forward to the night and always find great value in spending time with these dudes; the collective life-experience and wisdom around my fire on Saturday night will be immense...As will the bullshit we talk.
That's pretty much it for this week's #whatsupwednesday I guess. I'll be finalising the wood thing later tonight, getting it stacked and ready, then over the next couple days making sure I have the food sorted - I don't want to get murdered after all...It won't do at all to be left short of food, or drinks for that matter.
So how about y'all? It's Wednesday, the middle of the week, and I'm assuming your attention is also turning to the weekend? What have you got planned yourself?
