BLOGGING CHALLENGE: Day 4: 20 YOUR DREAM JOB | Día 4: Mi trabajo soñado [ESP/ENG]

En mi infancia siempre escuchaba a los mayores hablar sobre los mejores trabajos, en aquel tiempo todos coincidían en que una buena decisión era ser abogado o médico. Según mi familia, cualquiera de esas profesiones era un pase seguro hacia una vida próspera.

In my childhood I always listened to my elders talk about the best jobs, at that time everyone agreed that a good decision was to be a lawyer or a doctor. According to my family, either of those professions was a safe pass to a prosperous life.

A mí me daba igual lo que decían, no me imaginaba ni en lo uno ni en lo otro, sencillamente el tema de las profesiones no estaba entre los asuntos que me causaran interés. Al llegar a la adolescencia continué casi igual, sí tenía claro que lo mejor era estudiar cualquier cosa, se me había quedado grabado el insistente mensaje de mi madre diciendo que tenía que estudiar…

I didn't care what they said, I didn't think about either one of them. When I reached adolescence I continued almost the same, I was clear that the best thing was to study anything, I had been recorded the insistent message from my mother saying that I had to study ...

Al terminar el bachillerato decidí inscribirme en la Universidad, aspiraba Ingeniería o Medicina, pero por la convulsión política del momento las universidades se mantenían paralizadas, así que la única opción que me quedaba, en aquella Caracas de los años 70, era el Pedagógico. Estaba escrito en el libro de la vida que me hiciera profesor. De modo que estudie mi carrera, me gradué y comencé a ejercer mi profesión docente.

When I finished high school I decided to enroll in the University, I was aspiring to become an engineer or a doctor, but due to the political upheaval of the moment the universities were paralyzed, so the only option I had left, in that Caracas of the 70's, was the Pedagogical one. It was written in the book of life that I became a professor. So I studied my career, graduated and began to practice my teaching profession.

Al día de hoy llevo casi cuarenta y cinco años de docencia y siempre le doy gracias a Dios por haberme colocado en este camino.

To this day I have been teaching for almost forty-five years and I always thank God for having placed me on this path.

Mi vocación docente la fui descubriendo en las aulas de clases. En cada nuevo año escolar me daba cuenta que aquello era lo que realmente me gustaba hacer, estar con los jóvenes, verlos responder a los desafíos que yo les proponía, poder contribuir a moldear su manera de ver el mundo, era algo que me llenaba de entusiasmo.

I discovered my teaching vocation in the classroom. In each new school year I realized that this is what I really liked to do, to be with young people, to see them respond to the challenges that I proposed to them, to be able to contribute to shaping their way of seeing the world, was something that filled me with enthusiasm.

Una de las cosas que siempre me ha resultado estimulante es lo dinámico que puede ser la actividad del aula. Cada grupo de alumnos es distinto, cada uno tiene expectativas diferentes. Las fórmulas que te resultan con un grupo no te funcionan con otro, por lo que siempre hay que estar inventando nuevos acercamientos para lograr que el aprendizaje sea efectivo.

One of the things that I have always found stimulating is how dynamic the classroom activity can be. Each group of students is different, each one has different expectations. The formulas that work for you with one group don't work for you with another, so you always have to be inventing new approaches to make learning effective.

Tuve la fortuna de jubilarme bastante joven, eso me permitió dedicarme a muchas actividades y a cultivar bastante la vagancia. Sin embargo, desde que me jubilé siempre quise conservar uno o dos cursos para mantener el contacto con las nuevas generaciones. Lamentablemente por las condiciones del país decidí no ir más a la Universidad. Pero no he perdido la esperanza de que aquí las cosas cambien y yo pueda retomar mí cátedra universitaria. Ese ha sido mi trabajo soñado. No hay nada que sustituya esa expectativa que tenemos los docentes cada vez que nos presentamos ante un grupo de alumnos, pensar que una palabra nuestra anide en el corazón de un alumno y le sirva para iluminar alguna parte de su existencia.

I was fortunate to retire quite young, which allowed me to engage in many activities and cultivate a lot of laziness. However, since I retired I always wanted to keep one or two courses to keep in touch with the new generations. Unfortunately, due to the conditions of the country, I decided not to go to the University anymore. But I have not lost hope that things will change here and I will be able to resume my university professorship. That has been my dream job. There is nothing that can replace the expectation that we teachers have every time we appear before a group of students, to think that a word from us nests in the heart of a student and serves to illuminate some part of his or her existence.

Con el encierro impuesto por la pandemia he podido experimentar un trabajo de otro tipo, en solitario, frente al computador, sin personas merodeando y disponiendo libremente de la administración del tiempo. No voy a negar que ese tipo de trabajo tiene un gran conjunto de ventajas, pero yo sigo prefiriendo lo otro. Para mí es insustituible el calor humano que se vive en cada aula de clases.

With the confinement imposed by the pandemic, I have been able to experience a different kind of work, alone, in front of the computer, without people hanging around and freely disposing of the administration of time. I won't deny that that kind of work has a great set of advantages, but I still prefer the other. For me, the human warmth that is experienced in every classroom is irreplaceable.
